Impressive car. Still unbelievably ugly though. Wonder how it will compare against the new M6 vert scratchchin

MB said they were getting back to the original meaning of SL (sports light) with this new model, maybe they should aim to be as attractively designed as the original also.
At 1850kg, which is only 30kg lighter than the Maserati Granturismo that everyone seems to say is a fatty, I'd say that they failed on both counts.
You're comparing it to the tin-top GranTourismo. The convertible is about two tonnes, IIRC.

This certainly isn't light, but at least it's lighterer.

Not to mention the GranCabrio also has nothing like the power of this car, wouldn't see which way the SL went.

In defence of the Maser's weight though, it does seat four.
Sorry, yes I did get that wrong! Should have said the XK-R drop top at 1800kg, but I reckon that the engineers at MB probably see it more along the lines of the GTC. I just don't get why anyone would spend this amount of money on a car with a massively pedestrian badge, awful residuals, epic thirst, bland looks and an image problem to anyone under 35. It's also quite close to nearly-new SLS money...and that is a rather special looking beast.

I'll believe that Harris is actually in love with a car when he buys it, like he did with the 4.0 (and from what I have read a whole heap of petrol-head gold before that). Until then I shall assume that it's poetic licence.

A bit too vulgar, but then I'm not the target audience. Glad MB are making such beasties though. Keeps everything interesting!

Did he actually buy it? More acquired on finance and struggled. £112 is going to cause a whole heap of trouble...

The old SL was, at least, a looker - the SL55 AMG is still a cracking looking car (or at least was before they facelifted it).

That is one ugly mofo - it's like finding out Ann Widdecombe is the hottest woman on earth in bed, you'd still think "errrrr" no matter how much torque or gogo it delivers.

That said, most of the MB range now has that "I've headbutted a wall" front-end treatment - see also BMW.

If 'buying' exclusively applies to people who hand-over cash for something - I'd say 85% of cars and 95% of everything else is not 'bought' by any fker...

Are the people buying these really considering a Ferrari California and vice versa?

To me, these are cars that might get compared in a magazine (ah internet) article because of their price and on-paper similarities, but surely draw distinct customer bases that don't overlap much at all.

You wouldn't buy a second hand car on finance would you? Surely only new cars are on HP. And do people not use cash points any more and actually buys things?

Granted I would get a loan to buy a 2nd hand car but then surely you are buying it?

Either way, £112k for a car on finance is a joke. You could buy a couple of houses in Scotland for that!

Well, I wouldnt have driven the cars I have had (and do have) unless they were financed...and not all have been brand new out of the showroom...some have been imports, some ex demo's and my 335i was 2 yrs old when purchased from a main dealer on the never-never.

Well however he chooses to finance things, it's still going to be registered in his name - same as a house with a mortgage isn't registered to the bank, they just have a charge over it.

I'm really not ars'd how he finances his passion, he seems to bloody love the thing and it's really none of our business.

It also broke a lot and was boring to drive.

Looks nice to me. Okay, it's not a patch on the R129 but it is a stunner, no doubt.

Once Dick Lovett have sold Mr. Harris's GT3 for £ 190,000 I am sure he will be funded sufficiently to acquire his next wheels.

Are you serious? A C63 Black isn't "look at me"? It looks like the batmobile FFS!!! smile

Both are great IMO, totally different reasons for existing and both perfectly valid.

I saw this in the metal at the local MB dealer this week. Don't like the looks, especially at the back which is too long. The previous SL was better looking. Of course, it didn't help that it was on display next to a 300 SL gullwing, a 300 SL roadster (undergoing restoration; body on a dolly next to the fully restored Chassis) and a 280 SL Pagoda.

Given that I can't afford a 300 Sl, my money would be on a pagoda every time... one day!
