Not all, I don't think.

Just the vast majority.
This, I agree, but I believe it has always been this way.
In the '80s the vast majority of mainstream cars looked humdrum and blocky and ungainly and awkward.
In the '90s the vast majority of mainstream cars looked humdrum and blobby and ungainly and awkward.
In the '00s the vast majority of mainstream cars looked humdrum and fussy and ungainly and awkward.

BMWs were always handsome if unadventurous, then Bangle got it back to front, but the current Z4 looks great to me.
Fords were hit and miss, but the current Mondeo is very handsome, and the current Fiesta looks very nice too, particularly in 3 door form.
Opel / Vauxhall usually get it right IMO, I don't like the current Corsa but the Astra is fine and the Insignia is quite smart.
Alfa 156 and 159 were spectacular.
So was the 166, and the Giulietta is like a more shapely Astra... if you don't look them in the eyes....
I think all current Range Rovers, incl. the Evoque, are good looking vehicles too.

I would say the vast majority and especially those in the past few years. All the BMWs with aircraft carrier bonnets notably.

I hate the narrow windows and I hate the thick pillars but most of all I hate the insidious "family face" that destroys any spark of innovation and replaces it with lazy design.

What they fail to understand is that if you don't like the family face, you can pretty much eliminate buying any one of their cars which is largely self-defeating. Give me an early 1970s Ford range where they all looked different.

Agree with all of that. Whilst I couldn't bring myself to buy one, I do think the Astra and Insignia are tidy looking cars. Followed one of those Astra GTC coupes this morning and was very taken with it. Much nicer than the Scirocco IMO.

I was in a ferarri dealership on monday and strongly disagree. I was pawing over a yellow 458 with a black roof and black leather with yellow trim on the inside. It definitely was not ugly!! To add, i wasnt looking to buy it (sadly!), they also do lotus and I was dropping mine in to have some work done. The salesman kindly let me have a poke around in it after he saw me gawping at it. Very very very nice car, which apparently had just been sold.

This seems to be getting a lot of flak in the looks department...

I can't figure out why though? confused Asides from the slightly narrow tyres it looks like a proper sports coupe IMO. Anyone care the share what's wrong with it or how it could be improved?

A very very very nice car indeed. It's not ugly, but it's not beautiful either and a Ferrari should be.

when the 458 came out I nearly threw up in my mouth
Glad it wasn't just me then. They're awful. It was my least favourite looking Ferrari when it came out but recently they're out doing themselves with the FF and 612 Berlinetta yuck

I think certain car manufacturers still make good looking cars. The new 911 is very nice; Astons (bar the Cygnet) are gorgeous; not to mention Maserati. In general though I would agree new cars are ugly.

Modern cars may be pretty hateful but they have dictated a new design language with slitty windows and thick pillars, chunky lines and high bonnets. This is the new modern so when the Toybaru comes along looking like the belated replacement for the Capri or 200SX, it just looks dated. I hate the Veloster but it looks modern, this looks old before it turns a wheel and not in a good retro styling sense either, more a "we had this idea back in the 90s, sorry it's late" way.

Yep - the Subarota is being trashed for not looking like it's based on a front wheel drive hatchback.

Mostly, yes.

It seems to be that manufacturers are producing 'appliance' cars with more the 'function over form' styling.

Unfortunately their function is to act as a nice fluffy pillow should you one day accidently walk into one that is moving.
