RE: Chris Harris video: RS 4.0 vs C63 Black vs M3 GTS
Discussion
Nice video. Only thing lacking in comparison to top gear vids is a soundtrack. Content was fantastic, enjoy the natural and unscripted feel to the narration.
I got a real understanding of how they all perform on track, i feel like i know how they perform at the limit. Others won't agree but I'd prefer more insight into what it's like in day to day life, does it bark on cold start up, how's it handle shopping bags, does it attract strangers at the petrol statin etc. that would push it to the 30 min mark and really round out the experience.

does the 4.0RS suffer the same engine problems as the 996 ?
is the 4.0 engine running at at its very limit due to its capacity?
What engine problems? you mean RMS? What 996? you mean GT3?is the 4.0 engine running at at its very limit due to its capacity?
The GT3's (All of them) run a unique race derived dry sumped flat six, not the standard engine.
And yes around 4.0 is near if not on the capacity limit for the engine? whats your point?

996, and some 997's suffer from IMS, RMS and Oval bores. The GT3's (All of them) run a unique race derived dry sumped flat six, not the standard engine.

The later 997's had a redesigned block (IIRC), and the 996 turbo used the earlier block, and also has no problems.
no idea on the RS stuff though
Chris' vids are surely first choice for people who are interested in performance cars. For the rest of the population there is Top/Fifth Gear, Xfactor or the Teletubbies.
Drove the GT3RS 4.0 at Silverstone in March. They let me do skids without the use of a helmet or the innovative 'Harris 7 / 8 point harness'. However, I chiefly enjoyed it because:
a) It wasn't my car and,
b) Was insured against damage and,
c) I'd already paid the fee so subsequent wear and tear on the tyres and brakes was not an issue.
I like a trackday drift as much as the next man, have owned and tracked various reasonably expensive cars, but I just couldn't bring myself to drive like this if I owned any of these 3. Trackday insurance is a rip off and the tyres and brakes cost a bomb. I'm sure there are other people that can afford the cars, but not the risk, and therefore never enjoy them to their full potential.
My only solution is to drive something cheaper and lighter, rag it to death on circuit, and put up with a bit of discomfort on the way home.
Done a vid on these yet Chris?

ow wouldn't that make for an interesting article and video if you could blag a ride in a recent F1 car, eh Chris?!
He already did that. Brundle was there I believe. Have a search.....no doubt someone will be along soon with a link.None of the cars are to my liking but much enjoyed the video all the same. Edited 'taste' to 'liking' as I have no problem with the garish addenda. It's more that they'd all show my V12 Vantage a clean pair of heels and all (bar the 4.0RS) cost a useful amount less!
Just don't understand why posters can't enjoy Top Gear/Fifth Gear for what it is and CH's content in addition, the more the merrier surely? I personally like them all. Petrolheads have never had it so good but then again I'm old enough to remember William Woolard.
Really don't get all this 'Top Gear's history' stuff.

Another great video thank you. 3 cars I doubt I will ever own, unless my 1:14million luck changes, but great to get so close to them through the video and description. I was very close to buying a C63 recently and that had more than enough performance for me, great car the Black must be insane.
If I did ever own any of the three I'd want to have enough money to use them like this too!

I appreciate the "need" to show the hooligan drifting for dramatic effect and those of us who have had to pay for >285 section rear end rubber, with our own funds...we don't drift!
This always interests me! Looking at the video (and granted, it could just be the way it is edited) it does look like CH is a lot less abusive of his own set of tyres than on the fleet cars! In the real world, even people who can splash the sort of readies to buy a £100k car will wilt a little at wrecking a complete set of tyres in less than 20 mins! (how much for a set of 4 for the RS for example ??)The increasing cost of tyres seems to be a bit of a forgoten subject in these times of increasing fuel prices, but if you drive a modern, high perf (and heavy) car with any gusto then you're going to be on regular first name terms with your local tyre fitter ;-)
