Two years ago whilst browsing the PH classifieds I bought this for my 16 year old daughter to restore.

It was towed home, but with the fitting of a new fuel pump it did run briefly for her birthday, she then spent the summer of 2010 stripping everything out.

She found chopping the floor pan out hard work

First attempt at welding

Getting to grips with spraying...not a perfect paint job, but a very good effort.

Engine back in biggrin

The really important part wink

Many parts were sourced from ebay and friends, but the carpets and hood were new.

Not the easiest job

Almost there

Car passed the MOT Saturday biggrin but currently isn't running properly, hoping to have it sorted by the weekend. Would like to complete the conversion from rubber bumper to chrome, just a case of waiting for something to come up on ebay at the right price. Will probably look to refurb the wheels as well.

That's pretty amazing - did she do all the work (or near enough) herself? Is she a car nut or was it Dad pushing her along?

She's not a car nut, but has suffered many a car meet and passenger seat in a TVR, the realisation that the only way she was going to get a car paid for by Mum was if she cracked on with it, yes she has had a lot of guidence and help with the bits that she was not physically strong enough to do, there were times when I thought it was going to be left to rot in the garage.

She was 16 when you purchased it, and that was 2 years ago...whistle

And this is PistonHeads....whistle

In all seriousness, top work. Well done.

Hat's off - 10/10 and nice to see that your daughter had to earn her first car rather than being handed something on a plate

Nice. Always had a thing for one, miss my B though. My mate had one years ago and his dad "restored" it.
Had more steel than Thysen. Ended up weighing more than a 2.8 Granny.

What a nice story, got any more pics of the restoration? I used to own a MG Midget and it was great fun, although I struggled to keep the rust at bay frown. Might be worth fitting a roll-bar for safety if it's her first car?
We took masses of pictures at every stage of the restoration, my final job is to put them all into a book for her.

Not fitting a roll bar at this stage as it significantly increases her insurance premiums, and we had enough fun and games trying to get insurance for her.

Great to see. Just one thing, I do hope the wheel trims it came with are never seen again!

That's a very good point, I need to check the garage, sure they were scrapped!

I did exactly the same when I was her age. Same colour too, I'll see if I can dig out some pics if you want? smile

My Dad bought me the Midget for Christmas when I was 15, it took me 18 months to get it where it was in the final picture. Hard going for a 15 year old, I definitely found it hard to stay committed to the project as it moved so slowly- payday seems so far off when you're a young apprentice!

I know the car is still going because I passed it going the other way in Tavistock a few months back. First time I'd seen it in 11 years. My Wife didn't know what all the fuss was about and why I was so excitedbiggrin

I had it from 15 until I was 18. I should have kept it, but my Parents moved to a place without a garage to keep it in, that plus a new job meant a bit more travelling than the old MG could realistically handle. So the Opel Manta replaced it.

Great times in both cars, but you never forget your first! smile
