take the road from glencoe around the loch to Kinlochleven, and back to glencoe again. its one of those roads long since replaced by a bridge, but which has to be maintained in case the bridge fails. apart from local traffic going to kinlochleven and sheep its 20 odd miles of empty A-road with every possible combination of corner, camber change, twisty bit and scenery which you'll not have time to look at. possibly my favourite road anywhere.

Do try the A708 between Moffat (M74 J15) and Selkirk (near the A7) - a brilliant drive in either direction!

The one that loops up and around the loch? Just checked it out on Streetview, looks absolutely incrdible!

What do we make of the A861 through Stonechreggen? I was thinking of it as an alternative to the A82 into Fort William the other side of the Loch but streetview seems to have it as a barely surfaced single track lane without passing places despite being an A road?

The Corran ferry? Many years ago, but I remember it as being a nice drive. I don't think it's a fast road, if that's what you're looking for.

If you're going by Corran, I'd also be tempted to take the route further west and go to Arisaig, which is beautiful. Fort William is a hole (sorry to anyone from there) and best avoided unless necessary.

Seconded! I'm only kicking myself we drove past that and over the bridge instead but I've done it on a previous trip. Kinlochleven is cool too...

I'd like to say that everyone is wrong... Highland roads are all crap, busy and full of police and speed cameras. All drivers from Englandshire will be much better off going to Whales or Yorkshirepudding and leaving Scotland to the locals, we'll just have to put up with it all.

Apart from the potholes and really narrow sections...

I find the A701 between Moffat and Edinburgh is much much better.

We did that on Friday aiming to find a little cafe in Kinlochleven, weren't banking on a mad vintage/hillclimb bike meet, so the place was rammed! OH loved the road round though, lots of fun and were following a white van which knew every bump and corner smile

I can remember when the bridge wasn't there and the choice was ferry or Kinlochleven, Kinlochleven was picked on a surprising number of occasions. I bought my first car that I had on the road at Chisholm's Garage in South Ballachulish back in 1973 a little 850cc Mini van, a great handling vehicle, better than the saloon version and surprisingly quick. That first run out of Ballachulish then to Kinlochleven and then on up the road towards Wick was great, then reality jumped on me when the dynamo packed in, it was saturday and with no garages open, I had to spend the night with friends in Balintore, re-charge the battery, borrow the battery off the friend's speedboat and a set of jumpleads then continue on up to Wick on the sunday.

I took my wife round by Kinlochleven in 2010 as she had never been along that road, it was likely that it would be the last time we would have the chance to go we did all the touristy things on our way back to Belgium.

Really enjoying hearing all these tales and shared experiences - keep them coming! Kicking myself for not taking the Kinlochleven diversion now though, grr!

Gutted I missed this trip, due to a last minute (and thankfully minor) mechanical...

Germany will be represented next time Dan, even if it isn't a roadster! (it has a sunroof!?!)

Wales next?

Had lots of fun on that road while designing the school down there.
Beware if you fancy chasing down white volvo estates in the distance - police driver training in my experience.
