TBH I just hate the pious attitude of some Horse riders. They ride on main roads at peak times, 2 abrest and will not allow, even the slowest traffic past.
I have been green laning on my bike, quite legally and have gone to the trouble of stopping, killing the engine to wait for horses to pass, only to be give a mouthful of abuse for daring to use the same rights of way as them.
Out of interest if I painted a car in Police colours and had similar decals on the side, what would Plods attitude be. I suspect that they would have a word with me about impersonating a police officer.

They're abusing the fact people will mistake them for police. It's wrong and shouldnt be allowed. Simple.

Private security firms have gotten into trouble for impersonating the police. I'm sure they will be interested in what the rider has to say.

I see about one horse a week, I make a real effort to not alarm horse or rider, horse boxes are a different thing, usually a 1940's Bedford with 2 bhp heaving itself and four nags, plus a middle aged horsey woman up a 1 in 4 at 1 mph.
Sometimes slowing down for Horses can be beneficial, when they are nicely topped off with a nice young lady of about 18 with ample frontage, all that bouncign up and down is fairly mesmerising, and Jodphurs can look damn good.

... because they think the law (fouling the highways & footpaths) doesn't apply to them, so they make their own up.

Surely for them to impersonate a police officer it would have to say POLICE on the vest. Also what difference does it make if the high vis vest is similar looking to a police rider, surely people will still act the same by slowing down and giving plenty of room.

Can't blame them for wanting to be seen and to make a motorist think twice before driving past too close / quickly to be honest. Looks like a good idea.

Having had my younger sister thrown off of her horse by an idiotic driver (Chav wagon)and breaking bones. I can see why that the riders wear those jackets.
Consideration should always be shown for other road users.

Wow. What sad robotised sheeple to be so angry and upset by the distribution of ink upon a piece of textile. Take a massive restock on your perception of reality.

It's become another bling fashion in Essex to go with the faux-by-faux, big sunglasses and oversized handbags. The horsey set (well the chav-done-good horsey set) parade around Tesco in them with no horse in sight.
It's impersonating a copper no doubt and AFAIK it's ok for them to do it but not motorist because the battenburg is for vehicles under cons. and use. May well be wrong though!

Consideration should always be shown for other road users. How do you perceive that a Hi Viz would have prevented your sister falling and breaking bones? Do they have anti gravity properties or built in air bags?

ED209 said: This annoys me too, the petshop i was in the other day sells these vests.
I see no need for it at all, i see a horse in front of me with a rider wearing a high vis then i slow down and give them plenty of room. A stupid note on their vest which makes the rider look like an arse will not change my behaviour. So they aren't aimed at you then, as you aren't the problem. The problem is the f kwits that don't slow down and pass with about 2 foot between horse and car. I know they do it because I've seen it. Usually I have caught up with them and been stuck behind them for a few miles whilst they pootle along myopically, then when we catch up with a horse I'll slow right down and they'll sail on by as if the horse wasn't there and f k off into the distance. I'm the one who gets the smile and thankyou wave from the nubile 18 yr old with strong thighs. Then I'll catch up with said f kwit again. Incidentally my mother says that motorcyclists are the most considerate, slowing down to a crawl or even stopping and switching off the engine. I would posit that being probably the more vulnerable of the two concentrates the mind wonderfully, but the few thoughtless car drivers don't seem to have that entr their little minds. Seeing a "polite" officer up ahead just might. Its quite simple, slow the f k down, pass wide and slow, and accelerate consistently once past until a sensible distance away. Horses were once the only means of transport. Most roads would initially have been simple tracks for horses. The car does NOT have more right to the roads. I have never ridden, by the way.

Why can't they be used as food?
I've never tried them, but I bet they don't taste that bad. It should be against animal rights to have the poor things abused as means of pleasure for people who like to smell bad.
We need these silly animals removed from the tarmac and onto our dinner plates.
