Lol, surely a "worst sounding engine" thread is just a "state your opinion" thread by definition? I don't see why saying that Subaru's Boxer sounds rubbish is any less "balanced" than saying that four-pot diesels do. There's no such thing as an absolutely "bad" or "good" sound. I'm sure someone somewhere likes the rattle of an I4 VAG diesel. ETA: To be fair, I do appreciate them for at least being different, and for that they should be applauded in the same way that I applaud the Multipla and the Juke.

Disagree on two counts that I can think of. The Subaru boxer engine and some of the Mitsubishi MIVEC engines, the one in my mate's FTO sounded superb at high revs. Sure the FTO wasn't a V6?

Many Many diesels... KA / Old Fiesta 1.3 petrol. Dates back a million years. Sounds it. Renault Laguna 2.0 8v petrol. Rough as an old boot. Vauxhall 1.6 8v. Another stoinker of an engine, especially when up the rev range.

Diesel Range Rovers.. whenever you see one getting nailed, the utterly dreadful agricultural clattering is so at odds with the glorious noise that pours out of the back of the V8 / Supercharged ones! They don't even sound like modern diesels, but like some ancient POS they hauled out of a tractor.

Aha, think you're probably right actually, pretty sure it was a 2.0 rather than a 1.8 which would make it a V6 - my brain just assumes 2.0L = 4 cyl.

My Civic
4 cylinders... not nice when pushed. Sounds harsh.
Thing is 4 cylinder engines can sound alright if you want them too. I think the VAG 2.0TFSI sounds quite nice in a gruff sort of way. Its not draining to listen to at least. I can't do over 75mph on a run in my car, the engine note really grates on me and its just too loud in the cabin.

StevieB said: Was listening to a 2004 Mondeo TDCI exiting a multi storey today and just thought, this must be one of the most horrible sounding cars out there! Very similar to a transit with that horrible whine when pulling away! These old shape Mondeo TDCIs seem to have got really noisy with age and mileage. In fact, is it me or do most dervs just get rattlier with age?
as for petrol cars, the old Ford Ka -horrible, horrible rattly old engine! (is this a Ford thing?)
Anyway, what are other peoples candidates for worst sounding cars?!! Known problem on the TDCi engines - the self tensioner on the aux pulley gets rattly as the miles go on

It has the be the diesel engine in the 'Smiley face' Transit from the 90s. I don't know why, but there is just something that attacks my ears when I hear one of those.

Basically, twunts that fit huge exhausts to the likes of this... http://youtu.be/3BZ1YEfXOS8Then drive everywhere flat out. Always makes me chuckle when crap like that takes 5 mins to hit the rev limiter in 1st gear as it's ragged down the road

Old Subaru Impretza, usually metallic blue. The ones with the big handle on the back. Sounds and looks like a poof's fart.
