Was listening to a 2004 Mondeo TDCI exiting a multi storey today and just thought, this must be one of the most horrible sounding cars out there! Very similar to a transit with that horrible whine when pulling away! These old shape Mondeo TDCIs seem to have got really noisy with age and mileage. In fact, is it me or do most dervs just get rattlier with age?
Couldn't agree more- I have one... At least it's distinctive. If I hear one outside I know that either my cab has arrived or mine is being nicked biggrin Cam chain, dual mass flywheel, aux. belt tensioner are all contributing factors.
The only thing that could possibly be worse is an electric motor.
In terms of petrol... I hate the sound of a slushbox particularly hooked up to less than six cylinders. Rover 'k'-series sounds like a bag of nails. Toyota yaris 1.0 is pretty nasty.

RX7/8's sound like a feeble engine with a burst exhaust.

I've never liked the sound of Evo engines much & the Galant before it (even GPA rally ones)

I HATE the sound of a V8. Yes, any V8.
There, I said it smile

Call me mad, call me deaf, whatever. My opinion is that they sound nasty and Ive never liked them!

Oh, got to add, the engine note of an automatic changing gear is pretty cringe worthy too

Flat four Subarus with unequal length headers - horrible, horrible things.
You kid.

Right?
No, it makes me cringe - they sound broken. Absolutely awful things.
Out of interest do you prefer V8s with a crossplane or flatplane crank? Assuming you like either that is.

The cat rattle on E46 M3s.

That engine sounds amazing until that horrible rattle develops.

It does depend on the application, but I think overall I prefer flat-plane ones.

All four cylinder engines. Doesn't matter if petrol or diesel, they sound st. Which unfortunately is all you hear these days.
I wouldnt necessarily agree. My dads 944 was a 4 cylinder and it sounded lovely.

On another note, my micra sounds st. No one can say it sounds good tongue out

Not so much the engine noise, but:

New Mini with it's whineing steering whilst parking.

Ducati's with dry clutches.

Agreed, I compete at sprint with a guy whose GT3 RS sounds sublime, proper echo-ey noise like a Ferrari. However, most of them sound like a bag of nails to me.

I probably need to don flameproof overalls but I hate the sound of subarus. The boxer engine sounds like a 2CV with a knackered exhaust.

The Endura-E engines used in the old Fiestas and Ka due become noisier with age due to the tappets I'm lead to believe.
Indeed that appears to be the case. When I first started driving, I had a 9 year old Y reg Fiesta Flight with the 1.3L Endura, 18,000 miles on it, it was not at all rattly. On the other hand, one of my friends recently got shot of his old Fiesta 1.3L, built in 1999 with 140,000 miles on it, and it sounded like a toolbox falling down a flight of stairs, like a smokey old diesel.

Worst sounding cars out there? Has to be the old coal burners. Even a st petrol is miles better than a diesel. Even worse when diesel owners get carried with their "torquez" and start adding straight through exhausts and remapping. Makes the previously offensive sounding car sound like an absolute fking tractor, with the smoke blasting out of the exhaust to match.

yes

Funny you should mention the diesel analogy, a friend had a Fiesta with one in on 130,000 that wasn't exactly in rude health, and I always thought it sounded like a very sick diesel laugh Conversely, my Escort that's twice the age but less than half the mileage still runs very sweetly indeed *touch wood*. It does have the distinctive 'rattle' sound but it's nowhere near as pronounced as on any other one of those engines I've heard smile
