Not at 56mph, but if the speed were low enough (as it clearly was in this case) then yes, yes I do.
In which case, from one dangerous driver to another, I'll respectfully say you're not fit to be on our roads- particularly if in control of an HGV.

Oh please, seriously?

We have "Trunk Sheets" at work, to detail where we've been, what time we left, what trailer we're pulling, etc.

In the past, I may have been "guilty" of jotting down four numbers in the "what time you left" bit because I forgot to do it just before I left. I may have done this whilst sat at traffic lights or even in slow-moving traffic.

Guess what? Nobody died or got seriously injured, because (as a professional driver) I know when I can and can't get away with a little "multitasking" whilst behind the wheel.

Bazza stop saying that, it's a ridiculous statement.

Is it okay for me to drive home pissed if no one gets hurt?
Can I cycle through red lights if no one gets hurt?
can I drive up the M1 at 150 is no one gets hurt?

As a professional drive you should be paying attention.
It's why both lorry drivers and car drivers are banned from using a mobile phone and not just the car drivers.

Who are you trying to justify your stupidity to?

There's no argument that says you either need to or should read or write paperwork whilst driving, or that it is suitably safe to do so.

The OP has been slated and ridiculed for taking a picture of a trucker driving dangerously. I find that truly amazing.

I was paying attention. But at the same time, I was jotting down four numbers which took all of a couple of seconds.

It would be somewhat ironic if he did. Tell us you had a passenger who took the picture while you were concentrating on your driving OP.

In your opinion.

I doubt the police would feel the same way if they saw you

But I'm sure they'd accept you were more then capable, being a professional wink

Exactly as I said earlier, think a bit of poetic licence has been taken with the thread title, should read `doing a bit of paper work while stuck at a standstill in traffic`.

Anyway all hgv drivers can multitask, being able to pour a coffee and roll a fag while not using the handsfree at 56mph in the middle lane of the motorway, 2 feet off the back of the car infront is part of the test!

What about while pissed though? Most HGV drivers are alchoholics so they should be pissed while doing the test to make it realistic. wink

A foreign HGV driver was caught near us a few years ago cooking and then eating a pan of spag bol while steering with his knees.

Dear Moron,

HGV drivers are supposed to be professionals and so they cannot be judged in the same way as Dorris on her way to the shops. It is their job to arrive at their destination safely.
Isn't that the task of every single one of us? I can't see how we can anything less than when we drive a vehicle, it's our task to do so safely.

Whilst I'm aware that you possibly know more about dangerous driving than the rest of us, are the trucker's actions dangerous? If the vehicle is stationary then I say no. If it's moving slowly then I say while it's not ideal, it's still not dangerous for me 'cos he's not likely to hurt anyone.

If the vehicle is travelling at speed then yes it's dangerous, but i don't think that vehicle is travelling at speed.

Because the Police never talk on their radios or operate their ANPR thingies, or fiddle with their Sat Navs while they're driving, do they?

Because they're professional drivers too.

Seriously, I maintain I was still fully in control of the vehicle. No kittens were harmed in me scribbling down four numbers.

Forget it, you wont win, they just see an HGV as a slow moving pain in the arse, totaling forgeting that everything they drive, eat, drink, play with, build, was at one point delivered one one. They think that HGV's should only be out at night but not delivering near them...oh no, and your in there way when they want to drive like utter bellends, cutting each other up and running into the back of each other because their journey is more important that yours.

How is it a defence to dangerous driving, to say "we deliver all your stuff, so we can drive how we like"?

Some people on here need to get real. There is no argument that driving and writing at the same time is safe (at whatever speed).

The driving in heavy traffic is nearly as impressive as the op`s photo skills, Surely if they were all moving the trees in the background would be blurred, think you`ll find the traffic was stationary. Anyway writing on a notepad while driving is hardly multi-tasking, that takes a special breed, aka sales reps, or women on there way to the office.
I've not read all the replies but to answer the question: I was the passenger and the traffic was very heavy and at times was slow and even stationary. I took the pic when we were doing about 15mph and so there isn't much speed (hence lack of blurring. He was at times doing easy 40mph while writing his book, which is stupid considering it was start/stop for around 10 miles.

I'm quite liberal when it comes to driving but this was just asking for an accident.

Well I'll say anyone who can write in a book or clip board that is resting on a steering wheel at 40mph which doesn't result in pen scrawl all over the page, either has some very special skills or that section of the M25 is very, very smooth.
