I am rather impressed that they have recalled before any reports of failures on these pages. Porsche take note on RMS / scored bores.
I would gladly buy a dancing donkey!

On one of those megafactories programs on Discovery, they definitely used a multi-tooled mill to make crankshafts. Can't be certain it was the Ferrari one but nonetheless...
If the cnc program was wrong then batch of faulty items would be more, strange the 3D digitised inspection process didnt find the fault. Surely it wasnt a man in red overalls with worn or non calibrated micrometer, perhaps he should have gone to specsavers !!.
Perhaps a worn tip was left in the cnc mill and chewed up the finish - inspection never saw it as they were at a bung bunga party with silvio. !!
How risky is the real truth, need a new engine later when others fail and recall warranty expired

The engines have always been pretty robust in their road cars, with a significant amount having quite high mileage (clocking used to be rampant with them) so it's not surprising that the factory is recalling them.

I wonder how far out it is, my guess would be less than the tolerances of a Ferrari V8's crank of 30 years ago.

I take it that from your comment that you have never lived with nor driven a "modern" Ferrari.

to be fair to Ferrari they have admitted the problem and are putting it right, and it;s hardly any hassle

I doubt anyone drives their Ferrari to work 5 days a week

although it could be worse

Vauxhall are still refusing to admit a fault with the Insignia which causes the front end to catch fire

and some poor sales rep going out in a blaze of glory

A bloke I know who lives 5 mins away from me drives his to work 5 times a week - I see him sitting in morning traffic every week-day morning!

The novelty of sitting in traffic every morning would destroy my soul.

If you can afford a Ferrari then have a nice practical car and maybe take the prancing horse out a few days a week for a rake.

That Ready, Steady, Cook TV Chef and MoS reviewer had a Ferrari go pop on him on the A34.

It appears to have botoxed it's lips too - really just a totally unattractive car which sells on that badge alone...

This level of service is like the 'alternative universe' version of what TVR used to be. I'm impressed

Re. the debate on manufacturing processes for cranks - the shaft is milled first, then the bits that rotate in contact with bearings and big ends are ground perfectly circular.

At least Ferrari are paying. I'm too scared to even guess how much a new crankshaft and 3days of labour would amount to at a Ferrari garage
