So the other day, May 1st, I was driving my EP3 Type-R back from work and I came across a flooded part of the backroad/lane I drive home from work on. I went through the flood the day before when it was slightly smaller and I survived...... Long story short, it was deeper this time, it was a 2ft deep flood and my car took in water, hydrolocked and I got stuck, the interior was flooded up to the seats, and a fire engine had to drag me out. Unsurprisingly the car was in need of a new engine so i'm now awaiting for it to be assessed by the insurance, so I can see if they write it off, im pretty sure they will. Basically: Am I a bit of a t t for trying to take the car through it? Am I right in thinking that Fully Comp insurance should cover this? And is a Clio 172 Cup a pretty good replacement?

Bad luck mate and shame on you for killing a K20A lol
With regards to your question about a Clio...don't do it...French cars have a bad reputation for a reason. I had my EP3 for about 35k very very hard miles and it was faultless.
The same could not be said about my brothers Clio 172 cup....

And surely you would have been able to see the water had risen in comparison to its surroundings (road furniture, cars and the like?). Dunno about the others, depends on your insurance co. and preferences.

Yeahh the way I see it is it's something to learn from and at least I won't do it again! I was absolutley gutted because it was my pride and joy, it was due a wash but that wasn't the best way around the hosepipe ban if i'm honest! But I think a Clio 172 Cup in Mondial Blue will have just as much legs as my EP3, but hopefully I will be sacrificing not that much, and gaining more fun and cheaper repairs, which is vitally important at 19!

Unfortunately you may lose on insurance costs. 172 Cup tends to be more expensive to insure than a 172 and even 182 (or certainly was around 4yrs ago). Insurers don't like the accident stats for that particular model for some reason ('enthusiastic' drivers + adjustable chassis - ABS\ESP ) Great cars though.

Cheaper repairs? Doubt it. Even if the Clio was somehow cheaper to repair, this wouldn't matter as you'd be repairing it more than the Honda so would cost more.

Buy a french car at your peril! I know from personal experience. Get a civic type r or a golf/polo gti if you can, they won't fall to peices and leave you in the lurch.
If you claim off the insurance prepare for massive premiums for the next few years

You're not the only one... Sorry to hear that thought.Yep a well maintained Clio 172 would be a good replacement, seek for phase 1s and cups ph2s,you might even like it more than the Type-R and keep it long, worth a look.

I was tempted by a Clio before I bought my EP3, but after doing lots of research it was clear that the Honda was significantly more reliable than the Renault (not a surprising result). Parts tend to be cheaper for the Clio, and the fuel economy is better but I couldn't be doing with fragile gearboxes (plenty of owners have had more than one replacement), steering wheels dissolving etc. The timing belts seem to be quite an expensive job on the Clio for some reason as well, and the driving position is pretty horrible IMO.

I did the same in my EK4, had a puddlesucking ricer w kpipe induction kit on it and it guzzled some flood water resulting in complete loss of compression. I ended up dropping in an EK9 B16B engine, then killed that about 5 months later at the Dimanche sprint when it spun a bearing. Kozy 2, VTEC 0.

French Cars are unreliable and break down all that time... electrics.... build quality.... etc Luckily for the few of us who aren't blinded by idiots on the internet that's mostly complete b ks and they are no more or less reliable than any other mainstream euro box although the chances are a 172 will have had a harder life than, say, a 1.2. The negative press tends to keep the prices low which can lead to wikkid bruv owners and If neglected they will cause problems as any other car and the interiors are fairly cack and cheap. I would suggest going and testing one before you judge all Froggy cars based on a load of advice from people who "had a dodgy Laguna once and it was the worst car eva and all French cars are s t..." Had mine for nearly a year now. 36mpg, nearly 20k, two trackdays, one exhaust mount and a wheel bearing. Really disastrous stuff
