RE: SOTW: Jaguar XJR (X300)
Discussion
Had virtually exactly the same car back in 96.. In those days we didn't have to worry about the price of petrol so I never worried about it's thirst but often though the fuel tank could be bigger:roll eyes:
One of the best motors I've ever owned. Luxobarge that could play sports car when required and still looks fantastic today.

ha ha, yes. i do subscribe to the bangernomics theory, but this for me would be a punt too far
This has nothing to do with bangernomics - this is shedding.Bangernomics is buying a cheap car which will need little or no work - old Polos are your standard bangernomics cars, can be run for pennies, use little fuel, go forever.
Shedding is buying smoky old barges and sportscars and driving them until they stop. You do basic maintenance of the sensible sort but you avoid fixing anything you don't need - no restoration - no preservation.
As someone once said, it's a form of "measured retreat" - the windows don't work so you open the door, the aerial doesn't work so you listen to CDs or your iPod, the exhaust is rattly but you patch it rather than replace it and so on.
As people have said, this car is a rock-bottom purchase because it's a bit tatty and the model hasn't bounced in value yet - so you buy it and you use it and hopefully you get your money's-worth from it without needing any expensive spannerwork.
The fact this one clearly needs a few things done isn't a good start - even tyres should be a warning item for shedders because they can cost 25-40% of your budget, per corner!!

Tastes change, I guess. The leather is much better quality in the XJ40 version too.
My first ride in a "propper" car was one of these - re-configured my synapses that did. Fire-engine red it was. That I6 makes a wonderfully hollow sewing-machine like sound - ?Is it yours? She's pretty!

The airbag warning light may be an issue, have the MOT rules changed yet? If so, the seller is getting rid with a month of ticket to go.
This.Pretty sure new regs are in force now/very soon so this might be an issue, I am sure you can be a dodgy bugger and just solder a resistor in line with the airbag to make the light go off though. And as already mentioned tyres will be pricey, damn cool car though and honestly would consider it for a bit of a laugh this summer, when it rusts to death you can whip the engine out and put it in something daft

I'd put it through a MOT before parting with any money, just to see if its viable. There's an obvious reason why the seller hasn't re-MOT'd it..scholesy said:

I think the wording says if the warning light is illuminated it’s a fail but if it doesn’t work it’s just an advisory. same difference isn't it? buy a car on the cheap and run it until it dies? whether it's a vw polo or a saab 9000 for £500, they're essentially both still 'bangers'. if the difference is related to the marque or type of car i.e. a sports car or a luxury car, then that's pretty subjective.Bangernomics is buying a cheap car which will need little or no work - old Polos are your standard bangernomics cars, can be run for pennies, use little fuel, go forever.

How much would it cost to insure this vehicle?
As a non- UK resident sometimes I find the vehicle prices in UK just so unbelievably low.
I insured mine for £150, but that was as a second car (i.e. I had a 'first' car to get to work)As a non- UK resident sometimes I find the vehicle prices in UK just so unbelievably low.
I had an X308 XJR for a year and didn't get on with it, I have a suspicion that the X300 is the better car but I'll take a S1 XJ6 please.
