Airbag warning shows on dash (intermittently, believed to be connection issue):
This is a MOT fail? What if it isn't an easy connector to find and turns out to be something else?
This single issue is the biggest problem with this particular car - it is an MOT fail, and the light has to be operational - taking the bulb out won't cut it.This is a MOT fail? What if it isn't an easy connector to find and turns out to be something else?
It's also unlikely to be a dodgy connection either - my guess would be that the light is on constantly now.
It'll be the main reason the seller is getting rid of the car I'd wager - I'm a huge shedding fan myself, but unless that light is fixed the car's not worth a grand IMO.

The X300's were blown straight 6, the X308's were V8 super.
Won't be too long until a 308 creeps down into this territory.
Getting there at £1500 ...Won't be too long until a 308 creeps down into this territory.

This has nothing to do with bangernomics - this is shedding.
Bangernomics is buying a cheap car which will need little or no work - old Polos are your standard bangernomics cars, can be run for pennies, use little fuel, go forever.
Shedding is buying smoky old barges and sportscars and driving them until they stop. You do basic maintenance of the sensible sort but you avoid fixing anything you don't need - no restoration - no preservation.
As someone once said, it's a form of "measured retreat" - the windows don't work so you open the door, the aerial doesn't work so you listen to CDs or your iPod, the exhaust is rattly but you patch it rather than replace it and so on.
As people have said, this car is a rock-bottom purchase because it's a bit tatty and the model hasn't bounced in value yet - so you buy it and you use it and hopefully you get your money's-worth from it without needing any expensive spannerwork.
The fact this one clearly needs a few things done isn't a good start - even tyres should be a warning item for shedders because they can cost 25-40% of your budget, per corner!!
same difference isn't it? buy a car on the cheap and run it until it dies? whether it's a vw polo or a saab 9000 for £500, they're essentially both still 'bangers'. if the difference is related to the marque or type of car i.e. a sports car or a luxury car, then that's pretty subjective.Bangernomics is buying a cheap car which will need little or no work - old Polos are your standard bangernomics cars, can be run for pennies, use little fuel, go forever.

The fundamental aim of Shedding is quite different to Bangernomics.
Bangernomics is simply buying a car as cheaply as possible, then running it as long as possible for as little as possible. It is entirely sensible. Johnpeat’s example is close to definitive as a ‘Banger’. A Polo is cheap to buy and there is very little fitted to it which will fall off or begin to fizz when it rains.
“Shedding” in contrast is an entirely more noble pursuit. Shedding involves buying something as flash as possible for as little as possible with ever present danger of being skewered by the first big bill the car throws up. Shedding is still driving a stupidly flash car but without the ostentatious show of credit. It is a ride of triumph and tears…

Tastes change, I guess. The leather is much better quality in the XJ40 version too.
My first ride in a "propper" car was one of these - re-configured my synapses that did. Fire-engine red it was. That I6 makes a wonderfully hollow sewing-machine like sound - ?Is it yours? She's pretty!

I like you description of the engine note, it does make a hollow vroom overlaid with elements of sewing machine…

Not mine, no. I do have an XJ40 though, I completely fail to manage its retreat here…

basically then, 'shedding' requires bigger balls http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

You're new here, aren't you?
ha ha, yes. i do subscribe to the bangernomics theory, but this for me would be a punt too farIt did seem to like rear tyres though.... stupendously quick after a supercharger upgrade, the look of shock on 911/Aston Martin Drivers faces when an old mans car overtook them was worth the purchase price alone

Amazing car in every way but, erm, I just can't think of use for it. Probably not worth the cost of an LPG conversion so not useable every day (unless you own an oil refinery) - but then you'd have a new one anyway.
A sad way to look at it I know!
Would this car not be cheaper to run then any 15K pound car you buy new.A sad way to look at it I know!
Your new car would loose 5K pounds in its first 12 months, you are never going to have to spend 5.000 pound in extra fuel for the same milage right?
All this ofcourse if it does not brake down. But even then you come out on top. The fuel consumption stops and you have only lost 1.000 pounds.
So I am guessing that this shed is cheaper during two years then any bland Focus, Astra, KIA,...
Am I wrong?

I've been looking at this exact car on the trader over the past week, this and a 740 for £999 which looks seriously mint.
What MPG does one expect? "30 on a run"

Yes some Alfas look nice, but not all, and that one is as ugly as a box of frogs! I really do not get the near hysteria some people show about Alfa Romeo. I blame Clarkson for making it trendy to like them and saying you can not be a petrol head if you dont!and isnt it much cooler?

As for the Jag, its a lovely car but its E34 M5 for me all day even if it does only have 311 naturally aspirated horses!

Yuk. Sorry, but anyone claiming that this isn't a moneypit is very optimistic!
Sit in someone elses to go all the way to le mans? Yep, great. To own? No thanks!
I think you need to view it as more of a disposeable car. Run it until it dies, even then it'll sell on eBay as spares or repairs.Sit in someone elses to go all the way to le mans? Yep, great. To own? No thanks!

I just sold my second X308 XJR last month, it had 122k miles when I sold it 70k when I bought it, and in that time literally nothing ever went wrong with it.
It did seem to like rear tyres though.... stupendously quick after a supercharger upgrade, the look of shock on 911/Aston Martin Drivers faces when an old mans car overtook them was worth the purchase price alone
i admire your leap of faith, but i fear i would buy a pup. i've always lusted after a porsche 944, but i imagine any examples falling into the SOTW category would be proper moody.
