I've driven both extensively and the Corrado is in an utterly different league in handling terms. It's in a different league to any of the other cars you mention in your original post too. I had a few assumptions on the Corrado VR6, which a bit of googling has proved wrong. However saying the handling is in a different league to a 205 GTI, or actually any of the cars I listed, is wrong! I would like a Corrado, but group 18 insurance is still too much.

Hmm, my experience has definitely been otherwise, but I guess it's down to the individual driver's preferences. For what it's worth, I don't particularly rate the VR6 Corrado (although I'd still put it way above the 205 GTi), it feels nose-heavy and poorly balanced to me. The I4 is a significantly better handling car.

Mk 1 Focus ST. Best front wheel drive car I've ever driven and that was with the pretty dire tddi engine.

But. 205 GTI constantly rated as best handling hot hatch of all time, and I know for a fact that the RS Clio is right up there too, and to be fair, so are the rest. Find any 'best handling FWD car' or 'best handling hatch' thread on the whole net, and these will be mentioned ad naseum, along with the Integra, sometimes the CTR. The Corrado does come up too, but nothing like as much.

Panda 100HP? Not as quick, but probably just as much fun?

But at 10k per year, I'd go for the Panda. A 205GTi has now moved on to a weekend car (and a damn fun one at that). You could get a good 100HP for about 3k.

I did 10k a year by bike before I had a car, so can probably live with a fairly rattly car! Not a huge fan of the Panda TBH, and all of the ones I can find are starting at around £4500!

Ford Puma. 3k would get a very clean example.

Racing puma is a very special car, more enthusiast image than 17year old boy image.

If you think driver focused=RWD, open and shut, I suggest you try a couple of the cars in my list, plus lots of newer ones - RS Megane, Clio, Focus RS Mk1, Civic Type R, etc. Willing to bet they'd all at the very least have a good go at a 325+ round a track, if not totally outclass it. the 306 I've just got out of does similar 0-60 as an e36 328, and I'm sure would lap in similar times too. rb5er said: Racing puma is a very special car, more enthusiast image than 17year old boy image. I would have suggested a Corrado, but have read what's been said so will have to say MK2 Golf GTI great cars. Would have to say not quite as intense as the 205GTI but far better built, more reliable and a nicer prospect for day to day use and still plenty of fun when the mood takes you. I would suggest getting a 16V Golf, I used to believe the more useable low down torque ref the 8V but then drove a 16V, way quicker.
Used to do 20K plus miles a year in my 8V GTI's (I've had two) and the main issues were CV boots but that's because both cars were lowered about 80mm!
If you go for either the 205 or Golf and look after it I don't think you really stand to loose any money the way the value's of these 80's hatch's are going.

I get the impression the OP is very set in his ways. Why not get another 205?

I didn't have a 205, but I may well end up with one!
I'm not set in my ways at all, just being realistic, and a hatch suits quite well. People are suggesting large saloon sized coupes, etc. when I'm looking for something small, practical, and cheapish to run.

Just because a car is fast around a track doesn't make it good to drive. It's impossible to balance a FWD car on the throttle on the exit to a corner, and that's fundamental to me in a driver focused car.
