RE: Chris Harris video: GT-R Track Pack vs 911 Turbo
Discussion
Harris, great video as per usual.
Favourite motoring journo at present.
Those PDK Turbo S's are insane when fettled by DMS, hit 207mph on clocks at Vmax in one last year.
I think the GTR has lost its unique selling point with the price gradually rising. It may well Be very good but Jesus they're getting pricey.....
Keep em cheap Nissan, rival the the M3 for price easily and you'll sell a shed load.

I'd like to meet a GT-R owner, the Nissan just leaves me utterly cold and I'd like to hear the appeal beyond the empirical. I just don't get it!
What's not to get?
It's the quickest car you can buy for the money. It's handling is incredible, the gearbox is incredible - the car just doesn't have any rivals IMO. How can a car you have never driven (I am assuming based on your comment) leave you cold?
I have owned a couple of Ferrari's, M3's and Porchses - the Nissan is the best car I have ever owned and I have had it 3 years now
Chris Harris even said those that think the GTR is too clinical just haven't driven one properly.
the evolution of the GTR price since launch has a lot to do with the exchange rate of the British Pound versus the Japanese Yen. In early 2008 £1 bought you 210 odd Yen. Today it buys you just 127. That's 40% less, and about the same as the increase from the original £52k for the base model.
Harris says: "What grabs my attention is the list price. The first UK R35 GT-R I drove was £52,995 - this one is over £30K more and it is mechanically little different. Yes, the 490hp is now 550hp, and there are a load of upgrades, but most of those come with successive modelyear improvements. Where once the GT-R was an absolute bargain, that is no longer the case".
You can't blame Nissan for exchange rates problems. Cost us almost twice as much to buy Yen today as it did when the GTR was first released. This is the only reason the GT-R isn't the bargain it was back in 2008. Simples....

You don't need to meet a GT-R owner.Just google any article about them from any journalist and read it and they will all explain why your preconceptions are false!

Except they first arrived in April 2009 and at the time Nissan still claimed to be making money on them despite the exchange rate being 140.I find it pretty inexcusable and a real shame. It still a lot of car for the money and if they had priced it at 65k from the outset there would seem nothing wrong with its current price tag.
BUt to increase it the way they have after acknowledging they could afford to put it out at 53k seems like nothing more than a piss-take to me.

Surely the 40K price difference makes it a little unfair as a 'real world' comparison though?
But then what the hell would you compare it with? That's what makes the GT-R so amazing - It's great value for money and punches well above it's weight. It's a genuine Super car killer. If you compared it to anything of a similar price, then it just completely embarrass it in handling and speed comparisons. Who'd have thought you could go from 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, in a car that costs less than £90k???? Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
