RE: Chris Harris video: GT-R Track Pack vs 911 Turbo
Discussion
it's rather ambiguous in this sense....it does weigh more which in boxing terms would be seen as an advantage, but in car performance it's a disadvantage. punching above its weight is a term used to describe something that performs better than it ought to against something else....in this case the GT-R holds to that.
only a tad more powerful but what, 150kgs heavier than the turboS which is WAY WAY more expensive and still it's quicker. i'd say it punches above its weight.

Except they first arrived in April 2009 and at the time Nissan still claimed to be making money on them despite the exchange rate being 140.
I find it pretty inexcusable and a real shame. It still a lot of car for the money and if they had priced it at 65k from the outset there would seem nothing wrong with its current price tag.
BUt to increase it the way they have after acknowledging they could afford to put it out at 53k seems like nothing more than a piss-take to me.
I'd rather they take the piss with pricing on these models if it allows them to then go to management/shareholders and say "this car makes us lots of money, can we make a replacement". It's better then them deciding that these niche models don;t have enough margin in them. What annoys me more is when 'normal' cars seem to be taking the piss - for example the list price on a 1.6 105PS Zetec Focus is £17,200. WTF?I find it pretty inexcusable and a real shame. When does 'might impressive' become dull?
Don't get me wrong, beautiful engineering wonders the pair of them, but aren't they both about as far from the ethos of fast cars, skill and connectivity as you can get this side of 500bhp. Horses for courses and the market for these will always be there, but it's a case of 'I want' vs 'I need this in my life'...

The really fun thing about gassing is that it allows everyone to state an opinion. Even funnier is the opinion stated by those who have no personal knowledge or are merely passing on the received wisdom of journalists - such as the most excellent Monkeyman.
So, how about this for an attempt at neutrallity based on experience..
£10k for the mods, c'mon, Nissan you are having a laugh. On the other hand, 50% more money for a car that delivers absolutely nothing more (and I mean at every level; performance, fun, specialness and admiring glances). No, I don't think so Porsche.
So, if money is no object and you prefer the porker, fill your boots. Back in the real world, take the GTR.

Great video, shame it's not an out-and-out track version like the porsche RS's but i'm sure one day that'll come. Still can't decide if I think the GTR is too big. Very keen to buy one (to follow an excellent nismo 350z) but at the same time can't decide if i'd use all that silly power on the road vs another 350z/ 370z or a supercharger for either..
Also agree with the other comments- a few lairy powerslides combined with some smoother serious track driving is absolutely fine thank you very much! Anyone complaining of that should browse the DVLA website in their lunchtimes instead.

Nice video. I'd take a standard GT-R and put the £10k into some proper upgrades, rather than the track pack with a set of wheels, brake ducts and the 'magic cloth' (sounds like something by JML on the shopping channel). The Porsche being completely planted going around the track made it look dull, however fast it was. At least the GT-R twitched a bit, even with Mr Harris behaving himself.

I'd like to meet a GT-R owner, the Nissan just leaves me utterly cold and I'd like to hear the appeal beyond the empirical. I just don't get it!
You don't need to meet a GT-R owner.Just google any article about them from any journalist and read it and they will all explain why your preconceptions are false!

What's not to get?
It's the quickest car you can buy for the money. It's handling is incredible, the gearbox is incredible - the car just doesn't have any rivals IMO. How can a car you have never driven (I am assuming based on your comment) leave you cold?
I have owned a couple of Ferrari's, M3's and Porchses - the Nissan is the best car I have ever owned and I have had it 3 years now
Chris Harris even said those that think the GTR is too clinical just haven't driven one properly.
Interesting, to quote:
Heading right towards 997 Turbo territory! What is price of a well specked 911 Turbo, £110k?
I wouldn't say £30k is close, its 35% more
It would have been good to see how much slower a standard GTR was, but i guess that defeats the purpose of the video. I would say the smart ones out there would use their £10k saving to make their own choice of track additions

punches well above it's weight
Slightly ironic turn of phrase there, given it's heavier than the 911 and there's this...
and this
and this
Weight then...
On the pricing question, a 2010 GTR can be bought for <£40k according to the PH classifieds. A PDK 2010 911 Turbo is around £80k-90k (which would be a normal Turbo rather than an S so more like £110-115 new than the £130 of the S in the video). Consequently I'd have to say that once you consider this, Chris is very fair to be comparing the limited GTR+10k and 911+15k. Even if you were financing the spread it is almost certainly going to be cheaper to own the Porsche so comparing them as relative equals doesn't seem to me to be invalid?
[I also wouldn't have either of them, but think that they are both epic cars and thought that it was a nice video]
