I really like the new polo - Mrs morgrp had a base spec 1.2 3pot the other day as a hire car and I've gotta say it was absolutely brilliant to drive - sure the handling was average but the engine was a little cracker - raspy, willing, punchy and frugal but still able to cut it on a motorway.
Not driven a new gti but have driven a new vrs fabia and thought it was genuinely excellent.
Say what you like about VAG and their cars but I've gotta say they've got some great engines going on at the moment

It's a cool car but not amazing, be interesting to see what the production model is like. I'm personally holding out for the BlueGT Polo, not quite as quick with 140PS but would make a nice daily driver.

What's scary is one of my mates could do 0 - 60 in under 6 seconds, quite a shaving off the book time! My Mk5 Polo GTI I timed at bang on 8.3 seconds to 60 and it just couldn't keep up

My Mk5 Polo GTI I timed at bang on 8.3 seconds to 60 and it just couldn't keep up That is very quick indeed! Are they a nice drive? Only ever timed 2 cars, neither my own, timed a 157k ph1 172 to 60 in 7.3 seconds, was dynod shortly after and found to be a bit down on power (149.8bhp) so I thought that was decent for such a leggy car. And timed a friends R33 gts-t Skyline from 20mph to 120mph in 9 seconds, it was heavily modified and couldnt get the power down, spun in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. I marked the one in the article down for having oversized alloys. Those front disks could easily accomodate a smaller wheel size. 220bhp sounds 'fun'. Does it get a propper 'slip-diff or some electronic gizmo?

No mention of weight, driven wheels, or expected performance.
What a crap article.
I'm a subaru fan, and I look to articles like this to see how these new WRC type cars relate to what I drive currently, and I can find practically no useful information in this article, and have to hope some other readers contribute what the author has failed to mention.
And to be blunt, I cant be bothered to read page after page, to find what should have been include in the article to begin with.

It's been regurgitated on many websites. As for this making production.. The base Polo GTI is nearly £20k now, and €23k in Germany. The GTI doesn't sell many here (anywhere?) so I doubt the bean counters will sign off on a RHD model for an even smaller niche. Say 500 LHD models at €30k?

The 2 litre lump fits? I'd prefer that over the over-stressed, unreliable, DSG only 1.4. I suppose they persevere with that engine in the GTI as it is better on emissions (only on paper mind) and lighter though. You don't have to do much googling to see that th oil consumption is a bit of a disaster though!

Very tasty indeed.
I'll wager a quid that it'll be ****ing expensive for what it is though.

It is not due mainly to safety kit. You would find it more due to THE CONSUMER why cars have gotten bigger. To offer more room than the previous car. To also outdo its competitior for size. How often have you read car magazines reviews of cars and they make the smallest size one in its class to be inferior. Size matters sadly. Plus its not just side impact bars that add weight. Things like all the extra electrics on board, a/c, huge alloys add to it. Tom_C76 said: Certainly not 100bhp too much. I've got the Fabia rather than the Polo GTi, and the chassis copes fine with 180bhp. Remember that as well as being bigger than a mk1 Golf, modern cars are heavier due to all the safety kit (and doors with more strength than tinfoil unlike the old fast Pugs )

The Up!GT should be 110hp and 920kg. Makes the polo a bit redundant IMO.

It's difficult to tell the difference between a Golf and a Polo these days. The Polo is about 9/10ths the size of a Golf, they look almost identical and they are both driven by asshats.

I'd rather have a Corsa VXR in all honesty, for multiple reasons. 1. It's not a Volkswagen 2. I would imagine it'll cost just 2/3 of this 3. Lifetime warranty

I'd argue I wouldn't buy a Corsa VXR because its a Vauxhall 2. And I should imagine the Polo will hold onto its value significantly better 3. Not really relevant when it has so many catches to it, limited mileage and only applies to the first owner. Each to there own anyway
