I'd play around as much as you can online with that Admiral quote on a Boxster, get it as low as you can and go for it if its what you want. 2.2kish is a fair chunk but it isn't a catastrophic amount to pay for insurance at our age.

Mine was somewhere around 1.3 when I first took it out, but I had an extra years NCB, and obviously 2 years in age over you OP.

If it comes down to insurance and you prioritize straightline speed over handling and looks, you could pick up a BMW 330i/335i and chip them, the insurance for those comes back insanely cheap for me, it was around 650 at 22 when I was looking at them last. There has been the recent theft scandals surrounding BMWs though so that may be over now.

I looked at the S2000 but I am not a great fan of it.... because i want to use my car as a penis extension, no really that is why I consider a poor mans porsche over better cars. The women dont have clue........

Honestly? You believe the S2000 is a much better car than the Boxster 987? Drive both first. I'm certain you wouldn't say the S2000 is a much better car. There's no doubt that the S2000 is a very good AND capable car, but the Boxster isn't bad either.. and plus, there's a sense of quality in a Boxster, which you don't get with the Honda.

Hoh ho! Good wheeze! I thought you were serious for a minute there!

In truth, hewn-from-granite Porsches seem to be a thing of the past and the Boxster (as nice as it is) is the cheapest and nastiest of the lot. They can suffer some pretty major faults too (always offputting when I get Boxster lust).

The worst the S2000 seems to suffer from is a sensitivity to suspension settings in that the wheel alignment and suspension geometry needs to be looked after or the handling suffers badly.

I've seen leaking roof-tops with the S2000... And yes, although the Boxster is a cheap Porsche, the 987 still has a sense of quality.. I didn't say it IS good quality, but a 'sense' of it is better than nothing! laugh One good thing I know about JDM cars is that their engines are pretty much 'bullet proof'. Well, most are anyway. It's the reason why my family has gone through so many jap cars. In fact there's an Evo 8 running 400/400 sitting in the garage right now. (Wish I could get insured on it..)

I've heard the horror stories of IMS and RMS issues on the Boxsters, but these problems only occur to a small percentage of Boxsters, and it's just internet forums like these which magnify it by a lot. (Apparently anyway...)

As I said, I've got nothing bad to say about the S2000, it's just a car I'm not a great fan of due to it's looks. Not that the Boxster is pure beauty either.. The only reason I'm stuck with a Boxster or a Cayman is because I can't get insured on a 911 (996 or 997).

I got my Cayman at 22, Admiral cheapest by miles so no real suggestions otherwise sorry.

23 now and an additional 991 Carrera, surprise surprise Admiral still cheapest, but you have to fight their renewals.

Not insured with them on my Mustangs though, they both had to go through specialist brokers, so Admiral are not the answer for all cars. I think KGM is the underwriter? I have no idea which broker it was in the end, either Classic Line or another whose name I forget.
Enviable history/current fleet! If you don't mind me asking, what do you do?

IMS failure is a real issue on pre-2006 cars. 6K plus to put right with an engine rebuild. Sure, forums make the issue seem more widespread than it is, but think about the impact if it does happen to you. Can you afford to fix it?

Regarding the quote the OP got from Admiral - in todays market that seems quite good!

Add more drivers. I cut a fair bit off mine by adding the gf, mum and dad as named drivers.

Being 22 (1 Non fault, no claim accident, 5 points SP50, and 3 years NCB) I decided to get a quote, just out of interest.
£1150 from Admiral, I could get another £100 knocked off that for multicar. Pretty good really...

£1500 is my personal ceiling for acceptable insurance, I was very close to buying an Impreza recently which would have been £2k. I couldn't bring myself to pay that though...3 months of heavy saving for something that will last 12 months is crap.

In-less you earn £35k + (then I'd just go for it.)

I would just stick to something cheaper until the insurance comes down, like me you still have a good 8ish years before knocking on 30 where responsibility kicks in.
My mk2 Fabia vRS is only slightly slower (60 in 7s and 100 in 18s VS 7 to 60 and 100 in 16s - All very rough figures) and is bang on half the cost to insure.

Out of curiosity, what are you budgeting for running costs?

ETA just had a look at your profile, your clearly able to handle the costs. Good on you!

Very true, same group as Elephant who I'm with at the moment... Their renewal quote was £1600, on-line new business quote was £650!

I'm going over to Admiral though, as they can knock another £100 by putting it on my parents multi-car policy which is at another address smile

Well, I bought a 987 Boxster 2.7 in the end. And to say the least, it's an amazing car. No regrets for buying it. biggrin
Insurance wise, I went with Admiral, as they were the cheapest. Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Why are Admiral so cheap? Gotta love it! Just got an old Boxster, tried various sites.. and Admiral ended up being cheapest of course, through this broker - http://www.cityinsurance.co.uk/porsche_insurance.p... .. they get bulk buying rates off Admiral, so worked out a bit cheaper even than confused and co. Just in case anyone else wanted a tasty premium smile
