I got a 20 yr old pair of pliers replaced FOC under their lifetime guarantee scheme smile.

They are more expensive than the local motor factors, but they are more likely to be open when you need them, and their Professional tool range is excellent quality

I can only vouch for the Halfords in Falkirk retail park.

The staff have allways been willing to help , and possibly amongst the most helpful staff are the younger ones ...contrary to popular belief.

I like popping in for a browse .

Decent staff and very helpfull. I wish that Halfords could see the positive vibe within this thread.

Never really had a problem with them they do exactly what is expected sell car stuff a bit higher priced than the net/factors.

All Because of the convenience of them being just down the road and open when you might need them sundays/evenings.

The only issue I did have was the local store refusing to replace a broken tool with lifetime cover due to me not having the receipt, swiftly sorted with a strongly worded email to head officesmile

I have no problems with the shop and what it sells, but last time I visited the stores (in Essex) they really suffered from almost legendary basic British customer (non) service - running away when you needed them most.

By that I mean the boy or girl at the one manned pay area would be walking away from his/her post just as you were about to pay, and keep walking. I was and am always astounded how management allow this kind of nonsense. If the lad/girl acknowledged me and said they'd be back soon, I don't mind waiting. Any kind of explanation is better than waltzing off just as I am about to pay and get out of the shop.

Of course, the most natural thing to do is take a few more seconds to serve me, then go walkabout.

Have been a few times when I just leave the goods there and go and I must admit now if I am in Halfords and there is no-one at the till, I can't be bothered to shop there unless I desperately need the goods.

Very easy to stop this - it is a management issue and can be addressed in seconds.

My experiences are generally not particularly pleasant. I can't say I've had anything particularly horrible happen while shopping Halfords, but generally the staff appear bored (I'm sure they are), surly and when they do offer advice, it is generally awful. I'm not expecting them to know a great deal about cars and I know enough to ignore what they say, but its quite possible the general public don't. On many occasions I've been in a queue to pay while they have one member of staff serving customers and another two sitting somewhere talking or carrying out a ten minute long refund. Some of their tools are reasonable value, but most of their stuff is incredibly expensive.

I've had good and bad experiences at Halfords, some of the staff are friendly and helpful, others aren't. They do offer a lifetime warranty on tools, but the one time I took a broken tool back they didn't have a replacement in stock and didn't offer to order it for me - "just keep coming back with it and we'll replace it when we have one" was the unhelpful advice. My wife went to a local store with me to buy a bike and was so fed up with the cycle salesman's attitude that she walked out (he was very reluctant to adjust the seat-height in a cycle so she could try it for size properly). We went round the corner to and indipendent bike shop where they couldn't have been more helpful (which resulted in a sale for them).
I Have also had experience of a bike that had been bought and set up by their cycle mechanic. I had to set-up the brakes and gears properly before it was safe to use on the road.

I think there are two kinds of Halfords staff - car nuts earning cash to spend on their cars, and kids who just want a job and couldn't care less about cars. My local store has a few of the former and they couldn't be more helpful. It also has a few of the latter who couldn't be more feckless if they tried.

I've only ever written a letter of complaint once, and it was last year in relation to the Bishopbriggs branch of Halfords.

Walked in on a Monday night looking to buy a set of short number plates. The place was deserted, i think only one other customer browsing the isles, and about 4 members of staff talking together over at the bikes section.

I tried to make eye contact with them as i walked passed the staff, to aknowledge them and to show that I was looking for assistance. But they blanked me. I made my way to the service desk, where I continued to be ignored for about 5 minutes. Whilst waiting I used the time to confirm the spec of plates I wanted, although I couldn't see a price listed next to their picture in the plastic flip chart type things they have in the store.

By this time i was starting to get pissed off with the lack of service. I decided to see if staring at them would make any difference, but the staff did all they could to avoid making eye contact so they could continue their chat.

It became a game now, to see who would give in first. I didn't see why i should have to walk over and interupt their conversation, so I decided to phone to the store. Surely they would answer the phone, no. They ignored the phone and continued to chat away. I should have just walked out at this point. But i wasn't going to be beaten.

I kept the phone ringing, and waited to see how long it would take for them to answer. Quite some time as it happens. I could see the point if they were busy serving customers, but the place was dead, and there they were gabbing away, laughing and joking, not a care in the world.

I wasn't going to be beat. after a good 5 minutes or so of constant ringing, one of them must have got fed up with the noise, and eventually answered. He seemed suprised when I asked if he minded serving the guy who had been waiting for 15 minutes at the service desk. "Oh" was the reply.

Reluctantly they guy came up to serve me. I remained calm and politely enquired about the plates I was after only to be told "We don't sell them"

Yes you do, you ahole. I didn't say that, although i felt like it. I pointed the plates out to the guy, showing him their picture in the stupid flip chart thing. The sales asst replied to this "Oh sorry I didn't know we sold them"

I then enquired into how much they were, only to be told he didn't know.

I did what i should have done alot earlier and walked out.

They were kind enough to give me a generic blah blah blah style reply to my letter of complaint.

I have had a couple of dealings with Halfords recently and actually thought they were pretty helpful. I needed a battery jump starter and they didn't have one in stock. However, the chap I spoke to called another store and then picked it up there next morning, before work, and carried it to the store near me so I could collect. My arms are about six inches longer now, from carrying it home, so that seemed pretty good service to me.

It's not the ideal place to buy any of their products, but when your stuck for a part/product at 7pm on a Sunday where else can you go?
They should be commended for that alone.
I think you will find they are open 10-4 on sundays!!!

+1, or standing at the till for five minutes debating about just walking out!

Undeserved. So long as you don't go in with the blinkered approach that some kid on minimum wage will know exactly what you want/need then Halfords has its uses.

If you shop smart and use a trade card or the offers they run in store, the the combination of price and availability is pretty good. I picked up a set of spark plugs and a gap guage for under £9 yesterday. Happy with the price and no faffing about waiting for the local motor factors to re-open.

Over the past few years I've bought all sorts, including;

Various tools, car batteries, haynes manuals, car cleaning stuff, Motor oil, paint and various lubricants, camping equipment, bike related stuff. Not bad for a one stop solution and the high street would be a poorer place without it.

Annoying thing about halfords: buy a bulb uding their listing for a Subaru Legacy, then go and try and fit it. Its the wrong one again just as it was 2years previously. Do they never check these things?
They sold me an incorrect brake light bulb for my old Fiesta. When I returned and said it was wrong, they said it could not be, as they had been using the same bulbs for years, and the reference catalogue was always correct. When I told them what kind I needed, they replaced the incorrect one for free, but suggested I was not installing it properly. When I said they should come out and see the "incorrect" bulb fit perfectly, they said they were intrigued but could not come out as they would have to charge a "fitting fee" if they left the store. Bulb fitted perfectly and I was on my way - I wonder how many other MK4 Fiesta owners have had their time wasted over the years by this infallible catalogue?

I visited 2 branches of halfords yesterday (long story) and in both stores I was approached by staff asking if I needed any help.

This shocked me as usually their staff see you walk in and run away to hide.

Having just found this thread I guess someone has had a quiet work in their collective ears.
