I have been lucky enough to own 3 x Straight 6 M series cars - 1 x S60 and 2 x S54 - putting around 170,000 miles on them altogether - what an engine - the noise, the power, the fun :-) and (except for the S50) totally bomb-proof!
Shame it wont be NA though!

The e90 in the vid sounds so much more special than the prototype, I would trade some low-end grunt for a howling top end.

Since 4 is "one better" than 3 in their model range, it means a 4-series is superior to a 3-series, and therefore more prestigious. For a country that doesn't really "do" coupés at the moment, it's important to explain to them that they are both different, and better.
It also fits with the rest of the range; the 5 series coupé is (more or less) the 6 series, and if they ever did a sports car with engines from the 7 series it would be the 8 series again. I guess the new 1 series will spawn a 2 in due course.

I'd imagine they'd have to come up with a different name for the Chinese market.

450bhp sounds both optimistic and a bit too much for the M3/M4 position in the BMW range. That's a bit too close to the M5 isn't it? They should keep the 420bhp.

Here is an idea. For the UK and European markets keep it as an M3 in both coupe and 4 door gauze and for the chinese market change it to M3 and M4 retrospectively. Oh! Sorry thats a stupid idea. Not as silly as M fecking 4..... what a stupid stupid name. In the pub. Hey mate see you have a new M3.....? Eh sorry mate, Its a M4! Man walks away and mutters ..... Fecking geeky BMW driving baw bag!

Maybe pedantic, but its not a turbocharger if its electrically driven, surely it would be classed as a supercharger.

You are correct though, unless it's driven by the exhaust it's not a turbocharger as I understand it. More that the name has become a generic term for non-belt driven forced induction I'd say. Oh, almost forgot. Straight six in an M3. Yay!

At least it would sound a bit more fruity. May I suggest you listen to a new N55 engined 335/135i, fruity indeed!

M4? BMW, wake up!
The ancestry of the M3 name on a two door saloon/coupe is surely far more important than any internal naming convention you are forcing upon yourselves.
