Sorry - diesel engines should not be put in convertibles. If you want to drive around listening to the noise of a diesel engine, buy a tractor.

I love the idea of a mega-range GT. My in-laws have a house that is about a 650 mile drive from home. Whilst the journey is easily undertaken in a day, I have to stop for fuel at least once, and sometimes twice. Would love something that could do it non-stop cruising at 130kph.
An Alpina D3 will come pretty close to this range/speed combo. Plus the handling & grip is phenomenal.
i don't get this, do you honestly not need a leg stretch and a cup of coffee in 650 miles. I know i would and to fill the car up at the same time would be no hardship tbh

Eat, pee and stetch legs on the ferry/tunnel. Pack of Haribo Tangfastics on the centre console for in-flight refuelling. I find the whole making progress thing really satisfying. I know stopping for fuel only adds 10 or 15 mins, but then you get sidetracked by the BBQ Lays in the shop and before you know it half an hour is gone.

And then some on a motorway. Yes you can manage a quick fillup in a rush, but more often than not, once you have added in getting on and off the motorway, waiting for a pump, waiting to pay, the genral nightmare that it the avrage motorway service station carpark it adds serious time.

Having been busy with a project very local to me, I've just realise that 600mile range in my car's fuel tank would mean I'd not have been to a petrol station since - erm - last November...

At least 2 fuel stations around here have closed in that time - could have been a shock!!

It's perfectly commonplace these days to find a hairshirt eco-diesel that'll take you 600-700 miles between fill-ups, and fast diesel execs will give you 500 miles at a push, but it's deeply unnerving (in a good way) to find that something like the SLK can do similar numbers.
Just to comment on the above paragraph, my 320d coupe (which is quick enough - 8 secs to 60, and can overtake quite competently with a bit of planning) will easily see 700 miles out of a tank. My best is 800 with some careful (but not stupidly conservative) driving.

No hairshirts here!!

The Audi A8 3.3 V8 TDI I had as a road tester was pretty impressive in this regard - 220 km/h (indicated) Autobahn cruising all day and still 600-odd miles from a tank...

I wish MB well with this car. It should sell well.

Sadly 5 dealers in the South East couldn't be arsed to provide lease quotes, or a test drive. None followed up my calls, I even went into one in Guildford to chase as to whether their demo had come back (it clearly had days ago) and promises to arrange a test drive never materialised!

2 problems with the Merc.

1. It's a diesel
2. It's a Mercedes
2a. You can buy a proper car for that sort of money.....
I'd have to agree with you there. The last thing i want to hear in a sports car is the sound of a diesel engine.

Recently going from a 328i to a 330d I was expecting to be bowled over by how awesome it is to be able to do 500 miles to a tank, and I am finding I have used this wonderful ability precisely.....never.

My bladder would give up long before the tank of fuel in the 328i did anyway, and going an extra couple of days between refuels on my current commute is pointless anyway, as chances asre i stop off at the petrol station on the way to work to get cigs/energy drinks/paper etc.

Seems to be another one of these completely pointless diesel "advantages" to me.

90 litres (standard on LHD cars). biggrin

There are three approaches to range:
1. Big tank.
2. Good fuel economy.
3. A combination of 1 & 2.

I didn't say mine was an efficient way to the end goal, but it's more fun than a diseasal drop-top Merc. hehe

My '57 plate 320d coupe is averaging 41.4 mpg - this is about 70-80% motorway driving, over about 12k miles - which gives me between 550-600 miles per tank!

What mpg are you averaging to get 700 miles on average?

5-600 miles (800-960 km) from a 90 litre tank translates to about 10 litres/100 km or high twenties in mpg - quite impressive for that car. smile

Computer says 55.4, which I think must be quite accurate when I do the maths:

60 litres = 60/4.5 gallons = 13.333 gallons
55.4 mpg * 13.333 gallons = 738 miles.

The driving is probably as good as it gets economy-wise - fairly constant 50-60 mph with few stop/starts and no major hills and no city/town driving. I'm sure the ecomnomy would deteriorate if there was more urban driving, or average speed was closer 60-70mph.

(I'm no eco-warrior BTW - this just helps my conscience of getting <20 mpg out of the Porsche hehe )

I never thought a time would come when everyone was so concious of mpg but with rising fuel prices, improvements in hybrid technology or turbo motors, plus all my mates growing up and buying 'good on fuel' cars, it does seem to come to most of us eventually. I like to try and ensure I'm always running an economical car...plus a guzzler to balance it of course!!! wink
