I had a 1.9 17 years ago when I was 19. Remembered it as the best car I ever had (until I wrote it off). Couple of years ago a new neighbour moved it and had a mint 1.6 in the garage. I persuaded him to let me have a drive. I hated it. The front end was absolutely keyed into the tarmac, super direct, super fast and super grippy. The back end felt like it had a central rear wheel only - and that on a castor it was so mobile. This has nothing to do with the 1.6 vs 1.9 debate and perhaps the car was poorly set-up but it destroyed my memories of my favourite car!

Uhh, your profile says you had a 106 gti, not a 1.6 gti...

You are right! in 1991 i was fortunate enough to buy a near new black 1990 1.9 gti (130 bhp pre cat model G600SVL where are you now?) as you say every one said the 1.6 was the best so i had a test drive in both and went straight for the 1.9,all my mates had XR3i`s etc and at first they did not think much of the little French Pug, until they went in it or i left them for dead! i never regretted my decision, such a fast responsive drive it was as though this little car was a part of you! and so long as you drove it with some respect?? it would not bite back, yes i had a few close shaves early on in my ownership and it had the usual suspension problems with drop links failing etc bits of trim creaking and falling off and at times a rough tick over! but who cares when it puts a smile on your face every time you go for a drive! longest i ever kept a car too 1991 to 1995...http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/12.gif

I had 3 205 GTis in the early 90s and did over 150000 miles in them. In my view the 1.9 was definitely the one to have. It's got everything the 1.6 has got and then more. My only disappointment was that Peugeot didn't stick the 16v lump in it as it could definitely have handled more power.

Gutmann did quite a few conversions on the 205

Peugeot did a factory 309 GTi-16

dunno about the 205, but i had a 90bhp carb Santana, also 8v and 16v Golfs; and my fav was the roly-poly 90bhp carb Santana - against a stopwatch, far slower, of course; but carbs sounded great, tall suspension couldn't be bottomed out on any surface, long wheelbase was forgiving if you overcooked it, 3rd gear was longer and suited the bends better and you always had to drive the nuts off it. with the more powerful GTis, you were faster with less effort, but on basis of my VW experiences, i'd keep an open mind about the 1.6 205 being more fun than the 1.9, if not necessarily better or faster.

similar story with gen 1 MX5s; some prefer the slower 1.6 over the torquier 1.8.

A bit late to this but had a 1.6 (the wife's) and a 1.9 (mine) at the same time. I preferred the 1.9 because it was better in nearly every respect the most important being it was more fun to drive.

Never driven either of the GTi's, but a slightly stiffer, slightly grippier, slightly faster XS sounds wonderful = GTi 1.6.

we have had a bit of a comparison recently...

the conclusion was that the 205 gti 1.9 stuffed with the engine and wide track suspension from 309 gti16 (the green car..) was the 205 to have...

however... 205 Rallye with 1.3 twin choke carb engine was just that bit sweeter to drive.. smile

Another can of worms to open!

I liked the 205 GTi's both 1600 and 1900 versions as i worked for a Peugeot dealer when they were new, But thought the 309 GTi handled a lot better when too near the limit.

found the 205 a bit too keen on swapping ends frown

mind you when did you last see a 309 GTi?

Had the 1.9 8v on a 1.6 gearbox and it was very quick. Why they put that gearbox in the 1.9gti is beyond me. It turned my pug from a good car into a great car.

Never actualy driven the 1.6 however frown

The reason why you don't see 309s (apart from they didn't sell as well as the 205) is that they seem to rust much worse than the 205. You'd think they'd be treated to the same galvanizing process as the 205 but I don't know, seem to be rusty as hell.

Very few 309 GTIs left compared to 205s - something like 2200 taxed 205 GTIs compared to barely 150 309s.
I've looked at a couple of 309s in the last year but both were a bit too crusty to take on.

I've owned 5 205GTI's, the 1.9 is so far ahead of the 1.6 I can't see why anyone would question it. I still own one of each, and the 1.6 had to be revved so much harder to get going, it's just hard work to drive quick
