I understand why 1.6 could be little better than 1.9(mainly lighter engine in the nose making it even more agile, better reving), but they are except in grade same cars with same feel which new cars cannot match(even following 106 and 306 despite great feel were too indirect by comparison).

I still fail to understand how a 1.6 could be lighter in the nose than a 1.9 since those are two almost identical XU engines...

now, a 1.3 is a different matter..

Never driven either of them, but I do think that 205 GTis are very cool cars.

But, on the basis of power alone, the 1.9 would take my vote!

And those wheels look sooo sexy!

I don't actually recall any review at the time claiming that the 1.6 was better or "sweeter".

I claim that the myth itself is a myth.

Similarly the overall reaction to the 16v Golf was that it was peakier but better than the 8V

Whereas the 8V 306 XSi was generally preferred to the S16.

I don't remember seeing anything recently claiming that either. Everyone I know always wants the 1.9, and I have to convince them that these days a decent 1.6 is a much better buy than a ropey 1.9.

Says the guy who bought a ropey 1.9, and has spent the last 7 years running uphill through treacle to get it nice again. smile

It's an internet myth I think you'll find, one or two people make the comment and we have a new view. I was working at Pug when these came out, 1.9 was simply better, no one ever said otherwise as I can recall.

Monkey Harris in "Its not a Porsche shock"
PH are becomming rather transparent in their lets talk cr@p so there's loads of comments and hits. Can't say i blame them but a tad more subtly maybe ?
But seriously I love these despite their faults

I only ever drove the 1.9 as my girlfriend at the time owned one (talking 20 years ago). From memory, the only hatch that used to prove quite worthy at straight line speeds, was the Renault 5GT Turbos......

However, I'll always fondly remember the 1.9 as I got banned from driving (speeding, via the totting up process). I just remember it being seriously responsive, not sure how one would compare nowadays though.....but still great to look at....

Had two 1.6s and loved them both at different times. Cast around for another years later not expecting much luck. Found a nice 1.9 (with PAS no less) which I loved even more.

Gazed mournfully into empty garage weeping when SWMBO told me to grow up and sell it to a nice you man from Daventry.

As another has posted above

HAVE CASH, SELL ME YOUR NICE 205 1.9, I'M BEING SERIOUS

If I make the font bigger does that mean I'm shouting louder? Just PM'd a chap to ask for first dibs on his. Can I interest anyone in my Z4?

I can see the Pistonheads headline in 15 years time:

"Shock and awe - it's revealed everyone was wrong, and the Audi R8 V8 was actually worse than the V10"

I had 3 1.9's, two red and one green. Fantastic little cars, fast, noisy and with loads of torque steer. The interiors were rubbish, safety issues were laughable, the steering was heavy and the hot starting of 1.9's is well known. The 1.6 cars were easier to thrash, but there was little difference in the chassis setup and handling with both cars being very light and nimble. How can anybody on PH ever consider a smaller engined car to be better, are you mad? It is like the argument that BMW E34 M5 owners have, 3.6 vs 3.8. In the end the bigger the engine the bigger the thrill! Power corrupts absolutely!

I always said I'd never sell mine but it's currently averaging about 100 miles a year for the past 4 years. It's not quite perfect and the cost to get it there I guess just isn't worth it for me. I'd rather free up the cash and let someone else enjoy the car.

I've had over 10 205 GTIs in the last 16 years. Never owned a 1.6. Only ever a 1.9. Probably says it all for me.

Excuse for a gratuitous shot of my 1FM :-)

Did send you an email a few days ago, but if you didn't get it for any reason then let me know! (I never trust the PM system).

I only did 330 miles in mine last year. Done 270 so far in 2012,

Still wouldn't sell it regardless of if I did 1 mile or 10,000 miles

The cash offer would have to be astronomical smile
