RE: Is Volvo working on a secret M3 rival?

Meh
Why o' why did they not put the Polestar C30 into production!? Imho this car is infinitely more desirable then a Focus RS mk2 or BMW M3. The car would do wonders for the brand and no doubt sell out with a limited run, granted the price tag isn't in traditional 'hot hatch territory' but come on that car is epic win on all levels!!

I hope not...I prefer Volvo (as a brand) staying under the radar, We don't really want undesirables noticing them.
Was this you when you bought your volvo?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixh4DHvwDRY
"Taking on" the M3 is like taking on the 911, completely pointless. Just build your own car Volvo. The M3 is about balance as much as it is about performance, hence it has a front mounted longitudinal engine (nicely shoved back in the enging bay) and RWD for 50:50 mass distribution. A Volvo, with a large transverse 4WD drivetrain simply isn't going to work, no matter how much chassis tuning or electronics you throw at it.

that's a future shed if ever I saw one, no matter how good it is it'll drop like a stone
I fear you might be right, I would still buy one though if i was in that area of the car market. My fathers C30 2.0 Turbo "oil burner" is a very very good car. I like the protected feeling the car gives you as an object and also in its driving behaviour.
Volvo as a brand also strikes a cord with me, A T5 police spec estate has a big appeal......
A few things I would reccomend is this. 1 Dont make it too limited, or too expensive (45k/500-1000 cars) 2 Give it a big pair of balls! (400bhp+ 400ft/lb torque) 3 Four useable seats plus decent boot space.

Volvo will never build a RWD car again, they would get slaughtered in the Swedish press if they did, for years and years the Swedish motor press have told the less knowing that RWD is unsafe and absolutely lethal in the winter, hence they will stick to AWD or FWD.
Why do the manufacturers allow them to get away with said slander? mat777 said:

Why do the manufacturers allow them to get away with said slander? Put the average (poor) driver behind the wheel of a >200bhp RWD car and watch them crash, then the media gets hold of the story and points the finger of guilt at the manufacturer for making a car that has unsafe handling characterstics.
All true, to a certain degree and especially in the winter, FWD offers "safer" handling charecteristics to the aforementioned average (poor) drivers.
What's really funny is that the same motor press slate most of the modern FWD cars as a boring drive, and AWD ones as too expensive and bad for the environment.
Can't really win that one, can they?
