NEVER BUY A GREEN CAR
I did once - collected new from the main dealer as they closed for the weekend, put my rack and bicycle on the back, and ran out of fuel in 100 yd; and the rear wiper motor burnt out pushing silently against on the bike rack. Then all five mag wheels and the rear window were stolen overnight - the car left in the gutter, not even on bricks. Then on holiday a few months later I thought it was stolen until the police came to tell me it had been in an accident and carried away - some drunk in a tiny rustbox had pushed it up onto the kerb and into a wall, concertina-ing the whole body shell (his car fell apart and he was found by the police wandering down the road). The insurance company reckoned the body could be straightened but I managed to persuade them to write it off instead, and buy a different coloured car ...

Breaking it should be a genuine option should the worst happen! Is it the pics or is that gear nob bloody close to the dash?
I never had any problems with the gear knob, but I'm no rugby player. The thing about these cars is that often a write off can be achieved relatively easily due to the expense of the parts. Your typical Ferrari owner/insurer would only want new parts being used. But never a bad thing to have some 'spares' about.

Talking of gear knobs, the early F1 355's were always fun to park, as we would often have 30-40 cars parked up in the workshop at night within inches of each other (250 california spyder included). Getting the first F1 transmission cars to allow 'creep' in 1st or reverse always made it more 'interesting'. Too few revs, nothing, 50rpm more and the cluch would bite..hard, and you didn't so much creep as lurch. Made any good driver look like they were going to need a few more lessons before passing their test. Then they updated the software and problem solved.

Betcha Paul won't lie there on his death bed thinking, "I wish I hadn't bought that V12 Ferrari".

ETA: To all those of you thinking, "it's a lovely sunny day - I should go and buy a sports car" - GO GO GO.
Stop saying this stuff. I'm already avoiding going to view Elise's and asking about part ex's on the Integra as it is.
Best thing you'll ever do. Buy a good'un and you'll not look back mate.
I know. It's making the temptation hard to resist, and after doing some maths, the loan I'd have to get works out cheaper monthly than the one I;m paying now which bought the VXR/Integra (only one loan but I swapped cars after 12 months).

Using man maths it saves me money buying one, in my mind anyway.

What's the landmark in the last photo? Is it some former mine workings or a military range?

Time to deploy some local knowledge! That's the early warning radar at RAF Fylingdales - used to be three 'golf ball' randomes but they replaced it with that a few years back now. It's up in the North York Moors near Whitby - cracking roads up there too.

What a fantastic thread and top geeser for buying this.

I'd call it a calculated risk as Paul obviously has some brains and looks like he asked the right questions.

What a result!

11/10 for true PH'ness. True their may loads of PH'ers with a more valuable colection of cars in their garage but for someone who is comfortable in terms of money, their is realtively very little risk involved in splashing out several hundred thousand on a collection of exotica.

Paul however seems to be living the PH dream but on a more limited and everyday budget which in my view takes a lot more dedication to the cause and quite frankly b*lls. Well done sir.

Meh, green is OK on many a car. smile

And to the guy with the testicles made of pure tungsten who bought it, well done! Knowing that this image is attached to a V12 is worth £17k alone.

The best way to buy a car is to go in with your heart and risk the consequences later. Its how I buy my cars and to date (touch wood) not had TOO many problems ha ha

Stop thinking about buying an Elise - go get one. You'll never regret it. S1 values are on the up so get in quick.

Thanks Dan, I've heard of Fylingdales but was unaware of the changes that had happened. I didn't know that the Golfballs had gone. smile

Hats off to this chap. I really like the 456, I am not sure the changes over the life of the model did much for the looks. An ex once got grouchy when I was dawdling pulling away from a petrol pump at Membury services gawping at a 456 at another pump.

Just don't damage the front clam shell bonnet, seem to remember one of my collegues having a coming together with a ford at a junction, and a bonnet is/was approx 12k, lovely honeycomb construction! That was back in '02, so may have come down, but knowing Ferrari part stock levels they will be up there still, 'if' you can get hold of one.

Edited by Kermit79 on Friday 25th May 13:41
why, are the bonnets a specifically excluded item on the insurance then??
