The Audi V8 Quattro where/how do I get one? Is it a 100 model?

Sorry about the prune, having got rid of the petty squabbling can we please get back on topic.

Well the good news is I still have it :-). Hard to believe it has been almost 5 years since I bought it. Time really does fly.... I didn't manage too many miles in it last year but those that I did do were ones to savour, I'm afraid I did make a big mistake though.... I removed the mid silencer and the back boxes and replaced them with stainless straight pipes to release some V12 decibels, but it was too much and a trip to Yorkshire and back resulted in a mild dose of tinnitus for a couple of days. So when it comes out of winter storage soon it'll be going back to standard ! Now I see why exhausts from companies like Tubi cost a few bob... there is an art to making a Ferrari howl rather than drone... anyone want a Bradan centre pipe and custom made twin tailpipes for a 456 ? They will come with free earplugs 🙉🙉
Last year, with low miles was as expected a trouble free year, apart from the drivers door latch giving up the ghost and refusing to stay shut. Luckily it happened at home so I wasn't stranded. Over £800 for a new one so a quick search on eBay for a second hand one for about £150 and some labour and job done... also bought a spare nearly new single plug lead just in case, as you can only buy a new one as a complete set at several hundred quid so seemed like a sensible purchase which I'll keep in safe keeping for a rainy day.
So, so far still so good, but after five years of ownership I think I'm ready to have a change so watch this space....

As for the Audi V8 Quattro sadly I sold it.... missed it terribly so in true shed style I bought a 1998 S8 Quattro for a snip at auction to replace it... a few bits and pieces needed doing but now it's sorted and acting as the winter run around... 😉

Epic update, thanks for taking the time to keep in touch! Interested to see next steps, and can't help but desire a few gratuitous pics!

Note to mods - thanks for cleaning out the undesirable posts and keeping an epic thread on track

Well, I think the time has finally come.... I have now retired and have a fleet of cars unbecoming of a pensioner, so I need to start making some tough decisions. The 456 has been a dream come true... after owning a beautiful 308GT4 many moons ago (bought for 15k sold 5 years later for 15k.. I was happy with that... if only I had known the value 5 years later !!) a V12 Manual Ferrari was the ultimate for me, but after 6 years of remarkably trouble free motoring I think it is time to move on and look for a nice automatic 7 seater Volvo 240 Estate with dog guard and roof rack... (only kidding !).

Seriously though, and I am not sure if this is against PH rules but I will be putting up the 456 for sale in the very near future so keep your eyes open... I'll even throw in the period Nokia phone...

I have really enjoyed this thread over the years and knowing you have looked after the car well I am prepared to offer you £20K so there is a little bit of profit in it for you.

Seriously though I was looking at low priced Ferraris five years ago but never took the plunge, probably saving me from a world of pain.

Reading about your 456 always made me feel a bit wistful especially as you managed to overcome the problems without having to re mortgage your house.

Could you make it a condition that the new owner carries on the reports?

I’m sad to announce that the 456 has now been sold as part of my fleet thinning exercise and the new owner has collected it so I’m afraid this will be the last update on it from me.

It was almost as if it knew it was being sold as on the way to let someone view it the alternator decided to give up the ghost... the only time it has ever let me down,.. fate ? Luckily it obviously hadn’t seen the film “Christine” or things could have got a lot worse. 🤣

I am so pleased I took the plunge (risk ?) and enjoyed every mile in it... so if ever you thinking about one then I suggest you just do it.

Note to self - stay away from the small ads !!

Thank you for posting these updates, I've enjoyed living vicariously through you and imagining what if...

But you can't leave us hanging. This thread has always been about how you can run a Ferrari for cheap if you are willing to take a few chances, so the question is how cheap was it? How much did the car run you in costs over five years, and how much did you make on the sale?

One of my favourite threads. I'd +1 on the final report for closure, that is if you dare tot everything up!

Interesting that I remember this article at the time, its good to see it through the end years later, almost surreal because I remember where I was and what I was doing what I initially read this thread, a hell of a lot has changed since then!

I don’t want to reveal the sale price as that’s unfair to the new owner who may not want it divulged, but suffice to say it was more than I paid for it but less than all the others for sale, I.e pretty much the same situation as when I bought it. Not a mint car, but a reliable one and I have 6 years of manual V12 Ferrari memories to keep...
Went to a very amiable “car guy” who is considering doing up the bodywork and cosmetics to bring it back to its former glory. He has had a few exotica in his time so I hope the 456 gets treated to some 5 star treatment now.

Must admit I never dared add up exactly how much it cost per year, but reckon it was somewhere around an average of £2k per year all in, albeit using a classic car specialist very familiar with older Ferraris not a Ferrari dealer or specific Ferrari specialist and where sensible sourcing secondhand parts not new. From what I have learned the 456s are pretty bullet proof if looked after but I suppose it just takes some bad luck and one major component to fail to blow the budget.

Would I do it again.... yep... just don’t tell the wife. ;-)

A great thread to follow Paul, understand about the none disclosure on the price and it almost seems a little vulgar to talk about price. If we are however, I just hope the sale price covered your custodianship, he who dares...

That sounds like good going. I don't drive all that far, and I buy cheap petrol from Costco, but I expect £2000/year to pay for petrol+tax+MOT fee alone for my BMW and for there to be not much left afterwards out of that figure (if indeed any at all).

Did the appreciation offset a lot of the costs? Or is this quote-unquote-"all in", as in it's whatever subset of the TCO that you dare think about?

No great level of detail required, I'm just curious... always fancied one of these. I'm not generally that bothered about Ferraris one way or the other, but this, and the 412, I really like.

Then a Ferrari - any Ferrari is not for you.

Dad had a 456 which I wasn't very impressed with, I only drove it once and IIRC it managed around 8mpg (I wasn't hanging about)

Reading the entire sentence allows you to reach the end of the thought.

6 years of memories and not really any massive financial hardships from it? That does not sound like the experience I was expecting at the start of this thread all those years back. Excellent... well, not quite shedding, but whatever you call it.
