I don’t see it myself.
I can’t imagine the queen driving round in a Golf.
That's true, but I think Prince William's first car was a Golf.

Maybe.

I guess the golf has been around for so long that it can be seen as a 20 year old wreck or as a brand new car – which would be a car for most price brackets.
But the car has changed a lot. The new one and the old ones might have the same name, but they are very different cars.
Sure, a Golf might be OK for Polo, but not a 20 year old poverty spec one.

But what I like about the Landy is that the car looks the same now as it did 20 years ago.
A 20 year old 110 could have been bought new by a Landed Gent and been lovingly maintained all the years, or it could have been bought by a local factory worker for £800.

You are unlikely to see a the Second Earl of Chorley in an £800 golf, but you might see him in an £800 landy.

Every other car says something about the drivers status, money, image etc, but a Golf projects almost no immage to most people. From a 5 year old second hand basic specat £5k up to a Golf R with all the extras at £45k there is a good condition car for everyone and 95% of the population would not be able to tell which one was more expensive walking past and would not even give it a second look. You will not get it trashed in the worst areas and will not get funny looks at the best hotels.

IMHO no other car dose this. The defender is close, but not quite. The mini (old and new) and the fiat 500 are close, but a bit to fashionable to truly pull it off.
Totally agree and it's one the reasons we bought a GTI. Unfortunately, some tw@t keyed the door the other week (but also did four other cars in the road). Doesn't matter what you drive these days frown

For me the old Mini (but not the BMW Mini) and LR Defender / Series I / II / III.

Also, what about Skoda Octavia? Driven by the sort of people who don't care what you think of what they drive, as well as those who just want something cheap.

Any Volvo or Subaru estate
I have an Impreza Estate, and I'd have to disagree with that.

It's a lovely car, very practical, fast, quite fun, but not 'classless'.

Or both in my case - as my daily driver, I just want something comfortable, reliable and econmical, my 11 year old Octavia Estate does 2.5 out of the 3, having cost a small fortune on repairs to keep it reliable.

Saves me some money to pour into the classic cars my old man has, and will be passed on to me when the time comes!!!

To be honest whilst I thought I initially agreed, Saabs do have an overall "professional middle class image". The 900 is now nearly 20 years old and probably is mainly driven by car enthusiasts (but is probably classless in that context)

I think Subaru Legacy estates (NOT Impreza estates!) are the most classless. Owners appear to be paupers and gentry and all in-between.

LR Freelanders might also have a shout.

Thing is, they do that vulgar STI version though.

Aside from that, I agree but not as much as the Legacy.

AMG might improve the car dynamically, but they don't half naff-it-up. MUCH too showy. I'd say the only modern S-class with a claim to real 'class' is a standard S500 in something other than white, silver or black, with a Linen or Magnolia interior. Anything else is too shouty or too sporty.

Big wheels, big exhausts and loud two-tone interiors doth not a classy conveyance make.

I said Bentley and stand by it!

You seem to be confused by the difference between class and wealth.

I think Volvo estates do have a certain image, which tends towards the middle-class.

The mechanically identical S60 saloon is different though - one of the reason I chose mine was the combination of anonymity and semi-premium badge.

So we are in complete agreement then. Bentley as a brand cover all classes.

Anyway, I retract my previous post.
