So basically, you show goodwill to the manufacturer by supporting their dealer network, and they show goodwill back by supporting repairs outside of the warranty period

Indeed. Which is why I was glad I had a full ASH on my wife's TT when her dashboard started playing up, because it meant I could get it changed for free without too much arguing even though the car was over 7 years old.

Hi, WOW, what can I say!

I never expected such a rapid and committed response! Thanks to everyone for all their advice and it looks good that I can get it repaired without loosing the mileage.
It's time to get this sorted once and for all as it's a pain to live with and it stops me enjoying the car. Thanks for all the leads which I will follow up on.
