Not all Zagato designs haver been great, but I think the great majority of the early ones (up to, say, the beginning of the 70s) were pretty much spot on. Since then, it's been one or two hits (V8 Vantage Zagato - not the convertible though, Alfa SZ, Lancia Hyena) and a whole string of ugly misses (that hideous Alfa Romeo TZ3 thing, the Nissan Autech Stelvio, etc).

Today's Zagato is not the Zagato of the '50s and '60s either, with designers dead or moved on for other reasons and them allowing their name on designs they did not themselves pen (Aston Martin V12 Vantage Zagato).

I think if a smaller bodyshop that specialised in modified cars in this country were to do similar thiings to the DB7 for example, they'd get ripped into without question. Sees the name helps Zagato get off quite lightly.
Same could be said of BMW tbh but yep you're quite right....

I particularly love the delicacy of the roof pillars....utterly unsafe at the time I guess, but just makes me feel sad about today's cars and how their style is handicapped before the designer had a chance....

Coo-er.

I'd agree that Zagato's efforts are rather hit-and-miss but when they get it right they do a hell of a job.

I really like the Hyena and the DB7 but I've never liked the 80's Zagato Aston. Their formula does seem a little lazy sometimes.

Quoting the name of the SZ in a piece about good looking cars seems to verify to me that Chris has completely lost it.

Having said that, long live one's own opinion! At least if you buy one you can sit inside and don't have to look at it...

Until March 2011 I had a three point plan to my life:

1/ Win squillions on the lottery
2/ Buy Bristol Fighter Turbo
3/ Take it to Zagato for some new clothes

Hey S10 GTA the botom picture - is that an AC or an old corvette? or none of the above please
Its one of the new interpretations of a Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, was basically a rebodied cobra to beat the 250 GTO at Le Mans etc. Superperformance or something similar I think the replicas are called, Shelby endorsed and I think Pete Brock helped with development. All the want....

I have learnt a new thing, I thought it was an original AC Cobra Daytona. Its the car I initially thought of when seeing the BMW.

Think they look almost Identical, but there are only something like 6 originals. If I won euromillions it would be 1st on the list of things to put in the garage. Racing V8 and those looks? I think so biggrin

Would soon be followed by this as a less valuable daily wink

BMW and Zagato are the perfect pairing.... they both hit and miss in equal measure. New BMW 1, eye wateringly bad front end, and flabby arse, the new 5, looks great to my eye.

Now if between then them they could pick the good designs of each, they'd be on to a winner.

I must admit I dont mind the look of the Z4 Zagato, but I suspect it starts to look a bit awkward at the rear, the rear arch and side window alone look a bit naff

Hold on chaps, you can't possibly say that all Zagato stuff is hideous. I'm not a fan of the majority of their equipment but when I see these sort of images, it makes me feel like interfering with myself until I can't touch it any more.

I shall reply to that with this picture -

And then proceed to point out that at no time in human history, has anyone ever been more wrong than you are now hehe
+1 Zagato have expanded on Astons recent over styling fetish and take it to new heights frown
Especially with the new V12 frown

Except that wasn't designed by Zagato - Zagato only licenced their badge for it.

Zagato are marmite, but most affective when they have free reign.
Love or hate the SZ, "il monstro" is one hell of a design statement. AM Zagato was also a significant departure from the standard car at the time.
Their recent efforts seem too safe - or hampered by the corporate branding of the base manufacturer - apart from adding the double-bubble and tweaking the lights...worked for the AM DBZ tho.

After reading what they did to Frank Costin's design for the 1957 Maserati I realised Zagato lost it years ago. Assuming they found it in the first place.
