I hate Jags, don't honestly see what the appeal is. Break down all too often, and with huge running costs. Reminds me of TVR.
No problem with my Jag at all, and seeing as you mention it my TVR's never once broke down either!Edited by ParanoidAndroid on Tuesday 5th June 13:28

My father in law bought a brand new X Type in 2002 and sold it earlier this year. In 10 years nothing went wrong, or needed replacing. Just servicingIn the same year, I bought a brand new Audi A3 (Yes I know, I should have known better) and in the first year it went through a dual mass flywheel, CD Player and an engine management sensor-all replaced under warranty. It then needed two road springs and a rear wheel bearing, plus it constantly squeaked in hot weather when the interior light wouldnt switch off and the alarm kept coming on.
So not all Jags are bad and quite a few german cars are worse!!
This PH'er is a proper connossieur. XJR and a Lancia - well done that man!!
I'd recommend instead of Brembos, put EBC Yellow Stuff pads & Turbo Groove discs on there. I've done that on my 99 XJR, and its made the world of difference.
Only slight downside is that the grooved discs make a rumble noise under breaking that can be heard as the car is quiet - but to me that's a tiny downside
I'll hopefully drown out the brake rumble with some new exhausts soon to allow the V8 to be heard a bit better...
Get it on a long journey - I bought mine off PH in Inverness & had a great drive back to Suffolk. I recently had to drive to Wiltshire to collect a pop up gazebo & took the Jag rather than my van (gazebo fitted on the front passenger seat!) & I got 28mpg overall for the day!

Thanks for all the great positive comments. I am chuffed so many people appreciate the old barge as much as I do
I just drove it to work and gave my missus and her two mates a lift, they are all dressed up in twenties gear for a day out and as I pulled up outside work a couple of guys from my office were having a ciggie. They both gave me an assuring nod of approval, but I am sure that was due to the birds! Lol.

OT, "Delta" HPE? HF? Two cars no?
Its a Delta HPE (new shape 95 to 99) and the HF Turbo version (same engine as the Evo) The back of it can be seen in the 3rd picture down...
[quote]"The most annoying thing is the traction control, which is very controlling and literally cuts the power completely if it feels any slip, which in the rain tends to happen a lot. New rear tyres sorted this but you do have to be careful and keep the TC on at all times."

You mean 'off'? Surely if it's annoying you because it's overbearing it should be switched off, not on... Although in all honesty a car of that vintage and spec you would expect to have something at least on a par with E36 ASC+T where the control is applied to individual wheels, would you not? Sure it's functioning correctly?

Ha, the XJs are considered too small for their class here in the US. Try a nice Lincoln Town Car if you want some real room. You could rent out a flat in the back.
yeah, and if you drove it round the town centre after 11pm, drunken hen night gaggles would be climbing straight in assuming it was their classy rented limo for the evening... Fantastic barge purchase.
Provided one can live with their dipsomaniac tendencies, there's little to match them before you even get near £/performance & comfort. You've identified their only pitfall as a performance car though, the ready tendency to spin up a wheel from barely above idle in most gears (wet roads at 60mph plus can be momentarily "exciting").
An LSD from the factory would have made these unbeatable and would be the only modification I'd make to one, just to reduce that tendency a bit. It might sound heroic BS (but isn't), but leaving the ASC off (in the dry at least, I'd leave it on when it's wet/cold/otherwise slippy) does make for a much more natural feeling performance car instead of the stuttering you can get that makes smooth, swift driving tricky, something at which the XJR excels as you've discovered.
Having had a couple, running different tyres (one on the OEM P Zero Asimmetricos, another on Vredestien Ultrac Sessantas) makes a very noticeable difference to how they feel, traction was better with the Vredestiens - at the cost of ride and noise at speed but the Pirellis skewed the ride/handling balance in favour of the former, being quieter to boot.

Nice looking car there but if you are replacing tyres I always think of an article from years ago by LJK Setright who advised that you should always get the best tyres you can afford, buy good ones and you will forget the cost after a week, buy cheap and you will be reminded of it every time you drive the car in the wet. Pretty much spot on I think.

I had an R plate one of these, the XJR. On oem Pirelli rubber and on fast country A roads it did not feel safe. I replaced it a while later with the new shape and likewise, did not feel safe when wet and on a hustle. Stunning car though. Love the colour combo....

I agree with you on the XJR, in a straight line the acceleration is savage but I am not 100% sure about it round corners. But it is a wafter after all
