Great motors

Currently got several XJR's and there all great. One even has an LSD fitted and that has made a serious difference. However it's only on standard brakes so doesn't pull up too well

A mediocre 3 out of 10 on the troll gauge.

OT, "Delta" HPE? HF? Two cars no?
Its a Delta HPE (new shape 95 to 99) and the HF Turbo version (same engine as the Evo)

The back of it can be seen in the 3rd picture down...
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it! I did think the same and good to see us proven wrong once in a while.

I had an R plate one of these, the XJR. On oem Pirelli rubber and on fast country A roads it did not feel safe. I replaced it a while later with the new shape and likewise, did not feel safe when wet and on a hustle. Stunning car though. Love the colour combo....
Ha ha, it wasn't meant to sound like that smile But it is so rare not many people know what it is so I am always trying to explain it away...

Lol, well that's learned me! I ran a Beta HPE in the late eighties (and a coupe) but had no idea there were contemporary versions. Great Jag BTW.

I love XJ Jags!

To me, an XJ is a 'proper' Jag. I'm not fond of the X Type or S Type.

The XJ is an iconic British shape.

I just bought an X300 XJR a few weeks back, and I love it!

I am on the lookout for an X308 XJR sometime in the near future. I have had several XJs, in Series 3, XJ40, X300 and X308 flavour.

Personally, I prefer the cabins of an X300 - they feel a little more 'special', and seem to be better put-together than the X308 models. Although, they do tend to rot more than the X308s!

A 7 Series / S Class / A8 are definetely 'better-engineered' cars, but there is nothing quite like the feeling you get from wafting around in an XJ - it's sublime!

As long as they have been looked after, and on the V8 models they don't have nikasil issues / all the tensioners, etc, have been sorted, they are ultra-reliable.

It's hard to keep fuel in them, which is the only downside of owning one.

Well done - I love that car, and love the colour - what is the official name of the colour?

Is it just me or have these cars improved with age?

Lovely motor.
I think they have def improved with age, and still look so classy and oppulent wherever they go.

People notice them and know it's a Jag right away - such a distinctive shape.

Was the LSD retro-fitted, or was that an option from the factory?

I reckon that these are probably great if you can get a good one, and have the time and dedication to keep in in fine fettle. Otherwise you are going to have a pretty bad experience and end up with a 2 ton heap of spares.

My Dad bought a late-ish (78) Series 2 Daimler Double Six (5.3 V12) off a friend back in 1988. He lavished love and care on it (it had only 30,000 miles on the clock and had been well cared for by the previous owner since new). For the first two and a half years and 30,000 miles it was trouble free, and he'd only paid 3 grand for it. Trouble free apart from a few speeding tickets that is...(!)

Regrettably problems started with the V12's cooling system and the maintenance were beyond his own (better than average amateur) abilities. He bought an almost new low miler Mercedes 300E (W124) which he drove for the next 16 years. The Daimler was retired the garage where it still sits in a sad state of SORN and slow decay - he always talks about getting it on the road again, but I reckon the only place it will ever go is the breakers yard. We sometimes joke that he want to be buried in it because he still considers it his favourite car to drive ever.

You drive a Mini - hows the estate agent game going for you? Oh hang on. Is that just a presumptive thought based on stereotype....

Yep, great car, and these are amazing value for money.

I had the straight-six X300 version for a while, and like you I found the traction control was quite a bugbear. I also replace the front rotors with slotted Brembos and greenstuff pads... and I actually found that while they certainly pulled the car up faster the noise and juddering sensation didn't really suit the relaxed character of the car overall, so I'd simply recommend upgraded pads and larger, smooth-faced rotors (if they fit!!).

Other than that, yep excellent choice, but be prepared for the standards you set for your subsequent purchases to be raised significantly, because once you'd had a car that does what this does it's hard to go back. party

Glad to see you got a late enough one to not have to worry about the Nikasil liner issues - that was a perpetual concern for me when I had mine. Loved the car though even if it did bite me when I came to sell it - a £3 return spring in the supercharger failed and required £3k to repair! You have a to go a long way to beat one of these for a luxo-barge, although my current D3 A8 is a serious contender in my mind.

Hope you continue to have many thousands of miles of enjoyment, it is a lovely car smile

Bought a 2001 XJR 3 months ago and it is epic, speed comfort and poise......what a machine!
Going to get the timimg chains replaced soon and that's it, no other repairs needed.
A far cry from the E39 540i msport I had for the previous 18 months, an absolute money pit, 3500 euro in maintenance....

I didn't have the balls or bank balance for an XJR and bought a 2002 X308 3.2 sport from a fellow PHer over the weekend. 4 days into ownership I have to say I'm very pleased. Much more refined than my previous XJ40, though I have to agree with a previous poster that the fit and quality of the interior fittings isn't quite up to that of the older cars (perhaps because mine is the entry level model). One problem has cropped up which is a bit annoying - the central cubby box is jammed shut, I presume because of a broken latch. I don't want to force it and destroy the thing - if anyone has encountered this before and has any suggestions they'd be gratefully received!

The previous owner fitted it, however I don't know whether it's even an option from the factory. Driven several other jags and in the wet none of them behave like this one does

Stunning car. And I really like the colour combo.

I just can't get enough of XJR's and (S1) XKR's.
