Plenty of 3k ones about. I guess people are put off by the 'potential' issues they can have smile

Is it true they were designed to make DIY engine access as hard as possible?

I can't see that being part of the design brief somehow, all mid engined cars are inherently hard to access.

You decided what's next cmoose? I'm trying to work out whether to go 986, 996, Cayman or 993. The latter tempts but for lack of cash. Elise would be a good drive but like you, I need more pots for aural contentment.

Even my truck engined AW11 makes a better noise than a 4 banger...

Nice. I'm hoping I can get a few clicks for the mister which will get me halfway to a decent 986 or bottom end 996. Like that era of Mercs - old man had a 300 TE-24 for some of my formative years. Wanted a 300 CE but there were 3 of us here heirs plus wider family, so wagon it was smile If you go R129, I trust it will be the funf hunnet?

I wouldn't go anywhere near a Porsche of this era again with a 50ft barge pole irrespective of the price
Oh right. Thanks for that.

Honest John is hardly a good reference source. This one amused me amongst all of the repetition and contradiction (porous blocks or unseated liners?): ...Brake discs prone to rusting if car not regularly used... No st?

Most of this is just owner moans who are expecting Ford Escort parts and didn't realise that you can't pop the bonnet in a normal way. I am no mechanic but it is so simple to remove the covers. It tells you in the owner manual so it is not like it is not designed for the owner.

I had a 986S a couple of years ago. Owned it for two years, and after a bad start to ownership (mechanically neglected by the previous owner, but hey, he had a private plate on it, so that was all that mattered rolleyes).

I must admit that I totally fell in love with it at the first viewing at a dealers. I made all the classic mistakes of ignoring the fact that it didn't feel that quick compared to my then remapped Focus ST, and basically failed to my homework on these cars until after I'd bought it! It soon emerged that the MAF was knackered and a Lambda sensor was also shot. I had the 4 wheel alignment sorted too, which was out a bit, and it also emerged that it wasn't on its original engine (!)

My paranoia levels were at fever pitch at this, fuelled by the internet rumours, but it drove faultlessly after that work was done, and I did drive it very hard.

I also remember starting it one morning, and there was a rattle from the rear. I thought it was the IMS 'death rattle', but it turned out to be one of the lambda sensors on the rear silencers had worked loose. Easy DIY fix.

Great cars, and maybe I was lucky in a way, but I had some great motoring out of mine.

biggrin +1 Steel rusting when left exposed to the elements, something must be wrongidea That kind of detracts a lot of credibility from that review and if you need to told that oil emulsion in the coolant system is something to look out for you probably shouldn't be buying a 2nd hand Porsche.

PS- the linkage issue is likely not a serious issue, many good manual gearboxes employ a similar system and the gear selector lever on the gearbox housing can normally be adjusted to compensate for wear and tear(it may be a little awkward to do but no train smash- unless you find it has been adjusted fully already).

These are cracking small sports cars that can give you pleasure at sane road speeds. Sweet motor, good engineering, just lovely to drive. SLK, Z3/4, TT!?, S2000 nice but thank you I'll have the Porsche.

When the odd snob tries to look down on you saying only people who can't afford 911's buy Boxsters you can laugh at them and say, "Damn right it cost less than your diesel Golf's deposit you're still paying off!". Then drive off with a lovely porsche flat six yowl in your wakethumbup
