RE: Spotted: the £3K Porsche Boxster
Discussion
WOW! at that sort of money it would make an amazing KIT car donor! what about that great chassis with a light weight Lancia Stratos replica body on top? Or say a Ford GT40 replica? Hmmmm got me thinking.... just need someone who can build me an exotic body! anyone good with the old fibreglass??
I looked at the bottom-ish end of the boxster market before I went for my Honda S2K. I just wasnt brave enough and was worried about the cost of parts. The Honda is almost as fast as the S, handles just as well in my limited experience and should be equally as reliable if not more so than the Porsche. Consumables are definitely cheaper and regardless of the truth behind ims or rms failure I couldn't find any equivalent horror stories with the Honda.
I found it a Kind of half way house between the pork and the mx5 !
As usual though, I take my hat off to those brave enough to take the plunge!

Surprised at the cheapness of this, at least to buy. Still not a massive fan of the earlier Boxster's looks though so if it was my money, I'd save up a few hundred more and get one of these... http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012... ...kudos to the person who does by the Porsche though. If it turns out not to be a lemon, they've got a well cheap entry into Porsche ownership

Indeed. Mine's £220 tax and showed 38mpg on the motorway last night (but 22mpg average when I hit the twisties).
It has 4k of bills (service, disks, pads, IMS, RMS, clutch) in the last 6 months (and has a full Porsche history before that) so it's clear the low purchase prices are factoring in the potential running costs.
Same as my old MX5, 1994 and 130bhp!It has 4k of bills (service, disks, pads, IMS, RMS, clutch) in the last 6 months (and has a full Porsche history before that) so it's clear the low purchase prices are factoring in the potential running costs.
There was an article in CAR Magazine a few issues ago that covered used Porsches you could get to coincide with the launch of a new one. It stated that it's improssible to tell whether these, and the 911 engines, need a new or rebuilt engine without splitting them. I think they said something like budget on spending on the same again on another engine if it has this fault. At least an RX-8 you can get compression tested rather than taking a punt on one of these.
Was it Hartech where I read some technical document about the engine problem and mention ovalised pistons and two stroke bore technology? It put me off.
So what's the likely cost of getting the engine on these and 911s with the same liner issues if they need doing?

If you picked one of these up with a knackered engine would something 'a little more interesting' from a 911 drop in there?
I remember reading an article on a 911 3.8 engine being fitted to a Cayman, they made it work, but it was very expensive and far more complicated than you'd have assumed (well I'd have assumed anyway)!Brilliant cars, a regular customer of ours leaves his with us when he goes for his annual 6 week trip back to India as he doesn't have a garage or anywhere to keep it, he asks us to keep it and drive it a couple of times a week for his peace of mind. They're better on fuel than the MK1 mx5 I had at the time of use, with more power and a better sound track. And this one hasn't come to us for anymore than routine servicing in the four years he's owned it. Would love one myself!
Always thought they looked like a push me - pull you of Dr Doolittle fame.
I wonder in how many years time we look back (collectively) and wish we'd bought one at their nadir?
Their day will come, as sure as eggs are eggs, when values rise and there ain't many decent ones about. Probably a year or so after it happens to the 993 / 996.......

I agree. If anyone is unfortunate enough to acquire a car with clear lights, let me know. I'll take one on the chin and swap them for my fabulous amber lights ;-)Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
