StottyZr said: What are the running costs like for these? I'm looking on the classifieds already Same as a 996, for the most part. Parts are fairly pricey. Porsche indy's tend to charge a bit of a badge tax. But they're manageable if you are willing to be proactive, maybe do a bit of spannering yourself.

TTwiggy said: sorry, didn't mean to sound 'off', but as far as I'm aware, the only company that can properly fix the IMS issues are Hartech, who rebuild these engines with improved parts. Porsche built them with intrinsic design flaws. Many will go on forever without any issue - others will blow up (often at quite low mileages) with little or no warning. Plenty of outfits can fit an upgraded bearing.

I guess they are a bit faster and better materials and les rust? Much pricier to run than an MX-5 and also a bit less accessible and fun on track. Too much grip on the rear axle on the Box.

I looked at the bottom-ish end of the boxster market before I went for my Honda S2K. I just wasnt brave enough and was worried about the cost of parts. The Honda is almost as fast as the S, handles just as well in my limited experience and should be equally as reliable if not more so than the Porsche. Consumables are definitely cheaper and regardless of the truth behind ims or rms failure I couldn't find any equivalent horror stories with the Honda.
I found it a Kind of half way house between the pork and the mx5 !
As usual though, I take my hat off to those brave enough to take the plunge!

Surprised at the cheapness of this, at least to buy. Still not a massive fan of the earlier Boxster's looks though so if it was my money, I'd save up a few hundred more and get one of these... http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012... ...kudos to the person who does by the Porsche though. If it turns out not to be a lemon, they've got a well cheap entry into Porsche ownership

I think it looks great in its oriinal "launch colours" of silver with red leather, almost too good to do what I'd want to do to it (rip out the interior, stick a cage etc. in and track it), but at that price its certainly tempting.

If you picked one of these up with a knackered engine would something 'a little more interesting' from a 911 drop in there?

Ive got a Z3 2.8 at the mo which is a decent little roadster and is i swear cheaper to run than my old Cooper S, Although i wanted to have a Boxster but after reading this thread on RMS and IMS i dont think i'll bother! lol..

yajeed said: Indeed. Mine's £220 tax and showed 38mpg on the motorway last night (but 22mpg average when I hit the twisties).
It has 4k of bills (service, disks, pads, IMS, RMS, clutch) in the last 6 months (and has a full Porsche history before that) so it's clear the low purchase prices are factoring in the potential running costs. Same as my old MX5, 1994 and 130bhp!

If you want one there's no excuse now in not having one at that price, provided there's a back up fund (more than the price of the car too) just in case. Overall, it seems a cracking buy.

A good friend of mine is on his second Boxster. Loves the cars, but reckons one thing you cannot do is run them on the cheap. He reckons somewhere between £1800 and £2000 a year on servicing and upkeep is a sensible budget. Parts prices are on the steep side, to put it mildly.

My god, i'm dissapointed. I expected far FAR more posts crying 'RUUUUUUUNNNNN'! Awesome value for money if you can find a reasonably kept one and are also handy with a spanner!

There was an article in CAR Magazine a few issues ago that covered used Porsches you could get to coincide with the launch of a new one. It stated that it's improssible to tell whether these, and the 911 engines, need a new or rebuilt engine without splitting them. I think they said something like budget on spending on the same again on another engine if it has this fault. At least an RX-8 you can get compression tested rather than taking a punt on one of these.
Was it Hartech where I read some technical document about the engine problem and mention ovalised pistons and two stroke bore technology? It put me off.
So what's the likely cost of getting the engine on these and 911s with the same liner issues if they need doing?

I remember reading an article on a 911 3.8 engine being fitted to a Cayman, they made it work, but it was very expensive and far more complicated than you'd have assumed (well I'd have assumed anyway)!

Brilliant cars, a regular customer of ours leaves his with us when he goes for his annual 6 week trip back to India as he doesn't have a garage or anywhere to keep it, he asks us to keep it and drive it a couple of times a week for his peace of mind. They're better on fuel than the MK1 mx5 I had at the time of use, with more power and a better sound track. And this one hasn't come to us for anymore than routine servicing in the four years he's owned it. Would love one myself!

Its a deal, its a steal, its the sale of the f***** century......
I cant get my head around it. All the stick that Boxsters get ok, but they are really good cars, and sound good too.
Im guessing servicing parts etc are expensive....
Either way, lovely motor for the money.
