Seriously,if the odd grammar error bothers you enough to highlight it on a forum thread then you really need a hobby! Yeah, why use the correct word when a different word with a completely different meaning will do.

Yeah, why use the correct word when a different word with a completely different meaning will do. I think the point being that people can make mistakes, and it's a bit pathetic for a smartarse to jump straight on it when it doesn't make a difference to the point being made. As you were.......

eltax91 said: Absolutely. Both 1.9s are bomb proof. Just be careful if buying a late models with the 1.9. There were some 140 variants of the pd, but they had woeful reliability. You want the 90, 100, 110 or 130. These are faultless if looked after.
My current pd130 octavia is the last year with the engine and its a 54 plate. This isnt actually true. Yes the PD140 has some issues but theres only about 3000 gone wrong out of the 30,000+ sold (figures are an estimate), truth be told you only hear about the bad experiences, no one signs up to forums to say "hi, I have a problem with my a3...it hasnt broken down yet" OP: Get a 2.0 tdi A3 if you can, if money is a bigger issue get a PD150 Golf 4.

I'll be going to see a mk4 golf tdi with pd115 engine. Is there anything I should be looking for that are common, i.e excessive smoke from exhaust etc...?
Also, how often and how much is it to changing the timing belt??

I don't want to take the thread off topic but I'm looking at changing car due to a bun in the oven. Doing 15k a year means I may as well go for a diesel as well as a more practical car. I've been thinking something VAG with a PD130 but I'm also looking at the old shape Mazda6 with the 136bhp 2.0 diesel. How do these compare? Its the better equipment levels and to me at least, better looks that are tempting me. Does anyone have experience?

For about £5k I think I could get a decent A3 2.0 Sport, also thinking perhaps a Leon Cupra tdi, for circa £4.5k
Which is the best car? Or is it worth getting a 1 series

The DPF is the first attempt at the technology, its a well known problem and a DPF delete is expensive as the ecu isn't as easy to work with without expensive equipment. I bought it for 3.5k and sold it for 2k with a screwed DPF after 6 months. Biggest car mistake I've ever made.

Just a small point, but Skoda and Seat versions of the PD130 tend to use KKK turbos which seem to have a higher failure rate than the garrett's used by VW/Audi. Another vote for that engine though, from a VRS owner. A solid amount of grunt coupled with outstanding economy and general reliability.

What sort of MPG or tank range would you expect out of an A3 2.0 TDI?
Is it worth avoiding the DSG?

ruff'n'smov said: If its just an 80 mile a day commuter I'd get a little petrol Eeek, I tried that and it was bloody awful! Town and b-roads maybe, but 80 miles daily must mean a fair bit of motorway work. The small petrol I used was just fecking awful - always rowing up and down the box, crusing at 5,500rpm in 4th just to get some response out of the weedy little POS. Crappy little 1.3 got the same MPG as my old 530i due to the fact I had to thrap it to wirhin an inch of it's life just to keep pace with the flow in L3 commuter traffic. Motorways + small petrol engines are a properly miserable way to travel IMO.

I have decided that it is daft to finance the cost of a diesel, as it would cost me £100 per month to finance and save me about £100 per month in fuel.
So my solution is to perhaps buy a cheaper diesel i.e. a circa 2003 Golf GTTDI.
Is it worth going for the 130 or the 150?

Is it worth going for the 130 or the 150? The 130 seems to be the preferred choice. You might find my own thread of some use from a few days back.
