...constant braking is both pointlessly inefficient and shows a complete lack of driving ability/awareness? I know this has probably been done to death but it always gets on my nerves!
I notice it more and more that following people driving on the country roads where I live that the huge majority of drivers will brake for virtually every corner they come to. I am not talking about people in fast cars who are wanting to "press on" but those in normal cars just wanting to travel from A to B.
In these hard times one would assume the average motorist would be more conscious of the fact that every time you touch the brake pedal you are effectively wasting fuel as well as wearing out pads/discs.
Contrary to what many may assume you do not have to drive at a snail's pace to avoid heavy or even moderate use of brakes. I can "make progress" nicely with only light use of brakes at junctions etc just by anticipation and not following other cars too closely. I'm sure I'm not the only one on PH who has noticed this but its an interesting point I think.
Cue cool story bro etc etc.

Maybe to do with an increase in automatics?
I find myself braking considerably more in the auto we have despite my best efforts to keep it to a minimum.

Most people don't know or care anything about cars or driving and just use them to go from one place to another.

I had this problem when I first started to drive an auto, I found I couldn't drive it comfortably to "standard" A few hours training with my groups auto expert, learning how to actually use that auto box, and all was sorted. There are of course many types of automatic, and they require different driving techniques, we have two, a tiptronic 5 series, and a centrifugral smart car, I imagine the hardest one's to drive would be those that just have PNDR.

I am totally aware of this, people braking not only on every corner when braking is totally unnecessary but even braking after every f king slight bump on the road,it makes my piss boil. If you drive like this even at 20 mph, brakes will overheat and get f ked just like after a trackday. mod edit: please don't evade the swear filter, it is there for a reason

the worst offense is people who "confidence dab" ie they touch the brake just before each bend and take of 1mph so that they know they are safe .....

Yep, black front wheels were a sign of my driving for the first few months with our standard auto. I just couldn't kept catching up to the car in front of me all the time and had to learn a totally different pattern of anticipation and develop a kind of coasting habit to improve. I was used to the car slowing down a bit when I'd lift off, the auto just doesn't.

My mum does that - she's a f king menace on the roads. Should never have passed, and her driving has only ever deteriorated since that time.

I have a worrying feeling that this is a sign of how many people need an eye test.
(In a "what's that? i'll brake until its close enough for me to see" kind of way)

Always found the sufficient space you leave ahead of you to be the key to it. Ran a few auto barges and never really had any bother with the witless brake dabbers ahead, just a faintly smug feeling at how hard they are having to concentrate to keep their seven foot gap constant.

I always try to leave a gap in front so that I don't need to brake everytime the car in front does however you either get someone cutting in in front or get abuse from the guy behind

Indeed - the worst thing is that they also seem to be the ignoramuses who refuse to put their lights on unless it's pitch-black, presumably because they think it will "wear the battery out"!!!
