It's about 'The Event' and biggrin x 11 !
Everytime my bud takes his Murci out he gets attention everywhere, from smiles, to thumbs up, via copious cameraphone shots - and not least the amount of car windows that drop to get an earfull of the noise, especially in tunnels.
Hitting the nail on the head with: 'causing a fuss and brightening up everyone's day'

Pointless article in my opinion.

Name a BIG lambo that drives well?

Muira - no
Countach - no
Murcielago - no
Aventador - no

But does this make any of them bad cars? No.

They are purely about, power and noise and being big, that's what makes them a lambo.
does it mean Diablo drives well or you just missed it? wink

The Aventador drives well if you have a place to drive it well.

You answered your own question very well, looks, noise, top speed and poster suitability! How much are car shows/displays improved when there is a supercar or two in attendance for the little kids and the bigger ones to get a seat in and an earful of!

Yes. All about the "feel".
My Esprit makes me giggle every time i drive it. My GF now has a Toyota Supra. That cost a grand and is just as much fun in its own way.
Is the Esprit practical? Err, no. I have a Range Rover for practical duties. Any Supercar should be outrageous in looks, noise etc. Tunnel? Open the windows and floor it! Even if it's only up to 60mph. The Lambo is the pinnacle of everything a Supecar should be.

its the things that u cant really measure that makes great supercars great and the reason people lust after and if fortunate buy them.

Great article, car enthusiasm is all about variety. We may not always agree on topics (e.g: the FF, FR, 4WD camps) but without it things would be pretty dull.
Re supercars, they are all pretty pointless in reality but its a great thing that they achieve different aspects of pointlessness! Long live BECAUSE RACECAR!

"It just needs to make noise, look great and, should it come to it, be able to boast of a suitably silly top speed, probably never, ever to be attained in this life or the next. It does all of these things brilliantly."

There are two basic measures when evaluating a car:

First, there's the practicality, functionality, it's environmental credentials, depreciation and cost per mile.
Let's summarise all those things into a single generic, quantifiable metric we'll call...
...MILES PER GALLON

Then there's the more subjective aspects. The sound, the image, the smell, the emotions, the pure entertainment value, how it makes you feel, how it makes others feel and perhaps even how (un)obtainable such a car is.
And those can be aggregated into another generic measure. Let's call that...
...SMILES PER GALLON.

A few cars can deliver a healthy number on both counts. Most can't, erring on the side of the Miles per Gallon.

Fortunately the world is made a better place by those cars with high Smiles per Gallon values.

I love a good supercar/hypercar.

The world would be a more dull place without these pointless wonders.

Forza 4 will have to do for now until someone will see sense and give me lots of money for no other reason than to own one of these vehicles of the Gods.

Anyone?

It's the pointlessness that makes them so desirable.

Take my TVR 450se wedge:

It's rubbishly built tbh
Has panel gaps you can get your fingers into
Has wooden brakes
Is twitchy and nervous on a bumpy B road
I always have a list of 'to do' jobs (and mine's a good 'un)

But, i feckin luv it because:

It's retro 80's styling polarises opinion, but to me is uber cool
It sounds like nothing else
Given the chassis/brakes capabilities it's more than quick enough
It grab attention all the time

In fact, here's a gratuitous link to us in action.......

This is just like my desire for a watch;

Current watch? Casio G-Shock
Desired watch? Omega Seamaster Moon watch, 1969 vintage.

Both do the same job, both are functional rather than flash.

But I WANT a moon watch.....!

Yes lets just forget all about the Diablo smile

They will all make you smile but none of them are claiming to be "great to drive"

Being (semi) realistic I lust after a 997.2 GT3. Its my real world supercar and offers everything that I would ever need.

Does that mean that I wouldn't rush out and buy a 288 GTO, F40, F50, Zonda, 458 Spider and a few other cars if I dropped the big one on the Euro millions? No of course not.

I have never liked any Lambo - I couldn't get with the programme at all. Much rather a 911 or R8 than some Italian monster.

Then this bally Aventador thing - suddenly I'm a drivelling fool with lust in his heart!!

Can I tell you why? Not even slightly and I think there in lies the point!!

I'm in love!!

Well the lovely wife has bought me an Italian Supercar driving experience at Thruxton in 2 weeks time, during which I get to drive the Italia 458 and the Aventador, so I'll let you all know if they're cars you can use to do the weekly shop at Tesco's although I think I already know the answer to that!!!!!

Now there's some reasonably top lurking, right there smile

Enjoy Thruxton - it's a brilliant track!
