Good morning all.
I was lying in bed this morning pondering life. I've just split up from my long-term partner, and before I move onto the next ex-mrsjim I fancy doing something extravagant and a little bit crazy. Something I can show my kids, and something I can remember for years to come. I then had my eureka moment.... I'm a petrolhead. I enjoy cars, I enjoy driving, I enjoy history, and I relish a challenge. So I decided to try for a PH trip with a difference. I want to raise money for charity in the process as well. So my idea is as follows: In a suitably cliched SOTW-type car (BMW 335d or Mazda Mx5), I'd want to visit 100 iconic motoring landmarks in 10days. Starting at Lands End and finishing at John O'Groats. I'm thinking landmarks such as Beauliea (sp?), Silverstone, the Ford Factory in Dagenham, etc. I'd also want to meet as many PHrs as possible along the way.
The only problem is that I have no idea about how to organise something like this. So, over to the good people of PistonHeads: 1) where would I get the car from? Would I need to buy one? Would a local dealer be able to lend me one? 2) any suggestions on locations I could visit? 3) how could I raise money from this? Sponsorship per location, advertising space on the car, etc? 4) how realistic is this to do, factoring in sleeping, washing, eating, etc
Any suggestions or ideas would be gratefully received. Please bear in mind that this is only the start of an idea, so I haven't even started to consider details or practicalities yet.
Many thanks Jim

IN the most tactful way I can think of, if you say to your children "I drove a bit and met some people from the internet" they will just wonder why they haven't got a better dad. I'm not saying it isn't quite a good thing to do for yourself, but really really isn't "something extravagant and a little bit crazy. Something I can show my kids"

I can't imagine either of my daughters turning round and saying "Daddy, that sounds soooooooooooo mega cool. It's even better than Moshi Monsters and Justin Beiber!" So I'll rephrase the sentence. I fancy being a bit of a selfish f ker and doing something I'd enjoy whilst justifying the trip through charity. If I can raise mega-bucks for a cause I believe in, then so much the better. It may not seem crazy or extravagant to some, but if you knew me, you'd appreciate that it is a little mental for me

WHy not just stop at "I just feel like being selfish and do something I want to do for once"..... THe whole world collectively cringes when they see yet another "Just Giving" page saying "I'm off on holiday. Can you all pay for it please. Its for cancer honest?"

I wouldn't expect any sponsorship money to cover the costs at all. I'd pay for fuel etc, out of my own pocket. It'd be nice to raise some money for the National Autistic Society at the same time though. ETA Thanks for your honesty though. It is appreciated

How about doing what you say but picking up as any PHers as you can on the way. They can join on the convoy for as long as they want and peel off when they want?
Just an idea.

I've got similar aged kids myself and I definitely can relate to the "f k this, I want to do something fo myself for once"

Start off with some obvious ones, but it could turn into a pretty limited list in terms of diversity and I'm not sure how "iconic" some will be. Circuits (obviously many more) Brands Hatch Brooklands Castle Combe Donnington Goodwood Silverstone (as said) Santa Pod Thruxton Knockhill Other Mclaren Mercedes Benz World (doubles up with Brooklands) Beaulieu (as said) National Motorcycle Museum

Haynes Motor Museum is just up the road from Beaulieu near Yeovil.
The classic hillclimbs maybe, Prescott, Shelsley Walsh.
Old car factories maybe or you'd be able to take in quite a few F1 teams in a day, they're mainly clustered around each other in the Thames valley.

Going to be tricky to get to 100 though that will take a great deal of thought.
