To be fair it is 4WD with a twin clutch gearbox and 0-60 in under 5seconds. I don't think £32k is particularly expensive, especially when you compare to the RS3.
Hmmm, don't think he was saying it was too expensive. I think he meant that it will probably cost more than 32K when it eventually goes on sale...
Correct. Thanks.

This is looking good, will be replacing my Focus RS next year, and want something a little quicker but also more refined and with all the toys.

Looking forward to testing the M135i, this AMG and maybe a newer RS3? Should be spoilt for choice!
You are me AICMP.

I am also replacing a Focus RS next year (you'll agree: a hard act to follow) and want something not FWD and bit more upmarket.

I've narrowed it down to this Merc thing and the 135i. Not drawn by the RS3 tbh.

Favouring the 135i, purely because given the choice of two cars with a similar power output I'd choose the one with the larger capacity. That much grunt from 2 litres will be all turbo.

I'm in no rush so I hope Autocar do a thorough twin test in due course.

Another European car with a hideous ill-proportioned front-end - do wish manufacturers would stop pandering to Chinese punters' preference for 'large grille = status'. rolleyes

Hmm you what, I actually like it. To be honest all modern hatches look like MPV's these days for some reason but this actually manages to pull it off a bit better which a bit of added aggression to boot.

I also like the idea of a 300bhp 2 litre turbo. The Japanese have been using that formula very successfully for years so not sure why people are so worried. I'd like to see how Merc will tackle the woeful emissions\mpg that usually accompany a highly strung 2.0T too.

As for the price, as others have stated I will be very surprised if this is much less than £40k with some meaningful options.

I say good on Mercedes for realising how pointless the A-class was in the eyes of the business user and producing something that is far more relevant to peoples general requirements (AMG version aside).
Dont forget more serious competition in this sector will only up the ante between 'the top three' and should result in better products for the masses over the coming few years. Well done Mercedes.

Why are people slating the fact that it's only a 4-pot?! Whacking a stonking V8 in everything is a bit unimaginative IMHO. Horses for courses and all that.

Getting a usable and reliable 300bhp+ out of a 2L engine has got to be a good thing for the masses, I think AMG are just showing people how it can be done.

As opposed to Subaru and Mitsubishi who've been doing it for decades?

"A45"? bks. It's an A20.

The numbers on the back of my car mean "big engine". If I were to see this on the road, I'd expect it to have a 4.5 litre V8 and be suitably impressed.

A 4-pot AMG? An A-Class AMG? What's the world coming to.

Its interedting that people are commenting on the Korean influence of this cars design. Considering that both Kia and Hyundai current heads of design used to work for Audi and BMW whos design work was instrumental in creating the original TT, A3 and 1 series coupe I would say that nothing has changed in Europe and that the 'new' Asian manufacturers are seeing that European design is superior, hence employing european talent...
In short, Mercedes is just being Mercedes... not Korean.

I had a sit in one of these a couple of weeks ago (not the AMG Version) and I've got say I was quite impressed - miles and miles away from the current A-Class; which can only be a good thing!

Oh goody, just what we all need: more power, more weight, more size, more gadgets, more money.
It will take a brave manufacturer to offer less of all the above. And it certainly won't be Mercedes. The big cowards!

Mercedes are making all sorts of claims about class leading power, torque; "corner speed" and emissions/fuel economy.

The engine is claimed to be based on the still-born F1 engine utilizing a number of technologies from that but who knows how much of that is true. I don't like four-cylinder engines but it seems interesting at least.

The Haldex set-up is said to be rear-drive biased like an Aventador rather than front-drive bias like an RS3.

Overall, a pretty exciting prospect and I hope they deliver.

Yet it makes more power than a 43. The number on the bootlid is irrelevant tbh, that's not what makes it move. Nor does the engine capacity.
It may be irrelevant to you, but to a Merc fan it's a sad sign that they are following BMW's marketing-led bullst badging scheme and taking it to extremes. I get that Mrs Hollywood can't drive a new SL55 if the old one/next door's was a SL63, but this is a new model FFS. Are they just pulling numbers out of the air or is this an equivalency thing (as you point out, 45 is a wee bit more powerful that their old 43, so I guess so).

I look forward to 5 years from now when everyone is driving a C-EleventyBillion AMG Style AMG Avantgarde Elite AMG Brabus AMG

put this next to astras, focus, megannes on a wet day with all there power spinning away while this merc leaves them standing!!

i had last rs and its reached the point where yes front wheel drive cars can handle 300bhp in dry but in the wet they are compromised and we apparently get lots of wet days in uk ?

I like it but £32k is just the starting price

Bucket leather seats add £1300
Heated seats £250
Met paint £600
Nav £1995
Sound system upgrade £650
Uprated alloy wheels £450
Adapive damping £750
Zenon adaptive lighting £750
Parking sensors £300
Elec folding mirrors £200

So a decent spec car is going to be north of £39k a lot of money for a hatch back car but I still want one.

BMW now make several different versions of the 2.0T 3 series, with varying power outputs. Should they all be called 320?
How many AMG A-Classes do you expect them to make?!

Maybe it's just me, but a name makes no difference to how good, bad, or otherwise a car is, therefore it's really not worth worrying about.
It's worth worrying about in that sandal-wearing muesli munchers are now dictating not only that mass market cars are as economic as possible, but niche silly cars can no longer exist outside of marketing bullst. Man up, AMG. Throw a small block V8 in there, number it up according to the scheme AMG have been using for 30 years and balance it out with a recyclable Smart car made out of old shoes.

Amg ! Curse you to death and darkness . 330 hp in a hatch ? No way enough , I want a veyron engine just like your competitors .16 cylinders and four no 5 turbos . No less than 1001 hp and change the name , I who once thought about possibly buying a Mercedes keyring demand it . I want it to be called the Amg velociraptor blitzkrieg ragnar 4xt the third . How dare you not obey ?
4 wd ? Pah for slack jaws .
2 wd ? Pah that's even worse , I want 1 wheel drive . That's right one wheel drive . Plus it has to weigh less than a caterham .
I want fifteen pot calipers and 40 inch wheels but you bloody better make sure it handles and rides well . I want the interior from Buckingham palace by the way , shrink it tardis like . Also I have just posted you a sketch of what it should look like from the exterior .
One more thing you dogs , it better cost less than 45 pence or I'm going to stir fry my genitalia hoisin stylee in my mums ken hom wok . If you don't do all of the above and get me free tuition from Walter Rohrl and tax dodging advice directly from the pm I'll never , ever consider possibly buying a keyring again .
That will teach you to look at the market , at your competitors and ask your customers what they want . You should know only to listen to ruddy enthusiasts like me that account for 0.1 per cent of the buying public . What the hell is wrong with you Ola ? That told you .

How many are they going to make? Pass. Don't care.

I'm not sure, but I'd imagine the new A-class will be based around a transverse mounted engine. Chucking in a V8 isn't just quite as straightforward as opening the bonnet and dropping one in. I doubt the car will be £32k when it's released, but fitting a V8 would make it vastly more expensive, and lets face it, if you want a V8 Merc, you're not exactly short of options.
For someone who doesn't care you spend a lot of time arguing on the internet with those who do.

And old school AMGs did cost a bloody fortune (C43: 55K new, all sold above list). It's what's called a Halo product. S-Line and M-Tech are what you're thinking of, and unfortunately also Mercedes, it looks like.
