Sounds like another missed opportunity. I've driven the previous RS4, which was simply brilliant. Wanted to buy new, but missed the boat. Thoroughly tested the S4 which was OK, but over-complex and could not get the right settings (and when you stopped & started the car would ALWAYS default back to Comfort!). I hated the s-Tronic gearbox and that age-old Audi Achilles heel of cutting the throttle when the brake pedal was touched, which wasn't there on the RS...eventually bought an E90 M3 and haven't looked back at Audi.

I was hoping the looks would match, but...it's not to be.

The B7 RS4 Point to point, I still maintain that it was more than a match for all but the best pedalled GTR
Im sure it felt that way, but by the first corner you would not have seen where the GTR went. Not only leagues, but continents apart in terms of outright pace. B7 RS4 is still a lovely car though.

So what is Harris on about?

"It's not a drift king, but this car doesn't feel front-driven - and that's the biggest advantage it holds over the B7 RS4."

Doesn't the RS5 and this new car use the front biased Haldex?
Not haldex as far as Im aware
A4/S4 platform never used Haldex, that's the FWD bodgetastic A3 system

A4/S4/RS4 uses Torsen III

Ah I see Ted....so am I wrong in thinking the B7 was rear biased?

Hard to see how this moves things on. If it was lighter, you could forgive the lack of any power to weight ratio improvemnet, but again like everycar launched these days its heavier.

For me, a C63 AMG in black every day of the week, with a set of winter tyres handy for the few days a year we get snow or ice down here in the south!

I think it looks ok, but not as stealth as the B7,imo. Am I correct in saying that this will only be available in Estate shape?

Lol, I think people slating the B7 for having too little torque low down miss the point - if you're hoofing on, it comes alive over 5.5k rpm, and is mental at 8k. Complaining that it's not a big lazy C63 job down at 3k RPM is like saying that an S2000 is rubbish because it doesn't pull at 3k RPM.

I'm slightly sad that the new RS4 doesn't come accross as the giant that the B7 is, otherwise I'd quite fancy one some day in the future - but the lack of manual really puts me off =(

PS - the B7 is deffo rear biased, ask anyone who's played with one in the snow =)

no?

the change with the introduction of Torsen III was the ability to have a bias that was not 50/50

Not a car I could see myself ever lusting after. I don't even agree it looks good - the outgoing model is much more handsome and has a more aggressive stance. That side-on pic in the article makes it look under-wheeled, and much more S-Line than RS.

Unconvinced.

I like that very much, just as I did the B7 version. I think I'd take the C63 Estate, though.

I loved my B7, in fact I still do. It holds a special place in my petrol laden brain. So I feel somewhat gutted after reading Chris' review.
Extra weight, same torque figure, the styling and a multitude of driver adjustments that would drive me absolutely mental! Like Chris said, the B7 felt right straight out of the box and the only setting you changed (and I'm sure every owner did) was to press the Sport button. For cars to offer such a vast array of settings kind of tells me they're not right 'out of the box'.

One day, I intend to buy my B7 back because there's rarely a week goes by when I don't think about it. My 11 yr old son has never forgiven me for letting it go.

I pretty much dislike all audis/vw's, the last RS4 however, there was just something about it that made me want one. Whatever that something is, this one just doesn't have it.

I replaced my B7 RS4 Avant with a C63 AMG PPP and I haven't missed the Audi nearly as much as I had expected, despite that great Audi V8.The Merc feels every bit as special, starting it up still scares the crap out of me if the door is open, it is a characterful engine that feels like a herd of buffalo under your right foot. Fuel consumption pretty similar despite the big displacement.

Glad I didn't hang on for the new RS4!

Im confused at audis approach to the B8 RS4. With the S4, Audi seemed to move the game by downsizing from a V8 to supercharged V6 bringing similar performance with better fuel economy and handling. BMW now seem to be following with turbocharged M products. With this car they have broadly created a similar product to the last RS4 and in making the car overly complex added unnecessary weight. Somehow I feel a supercharged V8 or V6 would have suited this car better.

The stance of the car is perfect but the front lower spoiler looks very fussy compared to the RS5. Would I take this over my S4? Im not sure.

So M3 much better, and even a Merc is better. Better than average understeery Audis though.

the NA V8 is bloody amazing on full boil, FI can make precise throttle control harder (kicks in and warp speed acceleration), however the lack of FI on a high revving means a lack of torque low down in the rev range which makes it very inflexible in normal day to day driving ie you have to drop a couple of cogs to wake the beast

im glad its duel clutch thou as manuals are a no no for me for everyday road cars

I really like the gear change in my B7 RS4, but I think a DSG mated to that engine is a perfect match.
I know poeple don't like what's effectively the end of manuals in sports cars, but modern DSG's are really very good and in a high reving engine like that, a perfect match !
I'm looking forward to getting a test drive of the B8, and possibly getting an order in maybe next year when the market's settled
