I got Halfords bike racks which were manufactured by Thule, so check their stuff to see if it's better VFM. I have square bars and in retrospect wish I'd paid the extra for quieter aerobars. Box is a 2nd hand Thule, the shape looks quite streamlined and it's only half width so I can carry the bikes. It's great on holiday but don't put anything valuable in there and I put a long bike lock around mine to discourage thieves. Petrol usage up 15% and speed down to 70-75mph max, so there is a price to pay.

What is all this nonsense of needing all this space? In the beginning my partner and I managed with a new born in a fiat seicento ! I then bought a Mk IV golf to go along side it and had no issues. we currently use a Clio 172 and a skoda octavia vrs and have no issues with space even with the dog with us. Babies do not take up that much room. They just don't.

Chaps - its not his baby that's going to take up the space, its that he's going to have to put the hound in the boot so the only place for any luggage will be in the box. I looked at halfords stuff but bought thule - it is just better quality IMO. the atlantis box I have is pretty streamlined too so won't slow you down Aero bars make a big difference in terms of reduced noise - worth the extra spend. Get the Thule Aerobars - much quieter than square bars. We have a set permanently on the MPV because they seem to have no impact whatsoever on the economy and minimal impact on the noise. Either buy wider bars than you need so you can strap extra things to them, or get them fairly narrow to avoid banging your head on them as you get in the car.
Get the biggest box you dare and make sure it opens from both sides - we've got a Thule somethingorother which is lovely; also check the load limits on your car (my V70 will carry 100KG on the roof so a 23KG roofbox plus lightweight bars makes sense. If your limit is 50KG then there's no point buying the biggest box on the market.)

Carracks.co.uk have good deals on their Thule boxes, plus they do a cheaper range branded as Karrite. These are cheaper and better than the Halfords stuff if it's of any help. The guys there seem knowledgeable and they do next day delivery. Don't know if this helps!

Thule kit all the way with our Saab, the square bars thrum with no box on the roof, but with the box on it all goes quiet. Not sure which box we have, it was the biggest one they did at the time and fits in five decent sized bags... and the bag kit from Thule is well thought out and makes loading/unloading easy.
Happy at, err, motorway speeds, never leaked in the rain and survived Mrs. SWH attempting to lift a multistorey car park with it too...

Out of curiousity how much do these thing affect fuel economy? We do 300 miles a weekend in a Volvo V70 that is loaded with baby stuff and wife who has mild hoarding tendencies.
We are also getting a dog soon so extra space would help. I can't help but think the small ones are missing the point somewhat but I guess they are easier to work with off the car.

We even managed annual holidays in Cornwall from London five up in the Mini. Following the birth of our second child we sold our large (small in todays world) mk2 cavalier hatch and bought an AX 1.4 D, and said to my parents "If we are going to visit you, you'll need to borrow a cot" - A neighbour lent them a cot for the week.

Seriously though, I may be a bit of the mark slightly as the Octavia does have a cavernous boot which swallows 'stuff' brilliantly. I do have a soft spot for roof boxes for some reason.

I've used the same (s/h Merc-badged) roof box for a few years on a C43 estate and then a 211 E class estate. The impact on fuel consumption seems to be surprisingly low - maybe 10%-ish. The only downside on mine is wind noise above a certain speed and the fact that the sunroof is obscured. For those that ask "why use one?" the answer is two young kids and long trip which involve taking buggies, cot beds and other bulky items and/or camping equipment. As another poster says if you ever want to take a bike or two as well a long narrow one could be an idea. And it would be easier to get on and off and to store. Mine takes two to get on and off as it's quite heavy and awkward to position. And don't forget you need somewhere to store it.

youngsod said: I am looking at The Kamei Delphin 470 pack and the Thule Motion 800. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations? Obviously I need roof bars too, I think I will be ordering Thule bars, I'm just not sure if it will be square bars or wing bars. Are the aluminium wing bars worth the money? Just how much quieter are they? The thread has gone off on a tangent but coming back to the OP's original questions: 1. I bought a Kamei Delphin 470 in 2010 for holidays and I am very pleased with it. It is much sturdier than the cheaper boxes and should last much longer. The only problem I have had was opening it the first time. Kameis have a very strong seal and I thought the lock on mine was broken when I couldn't open it. Eventually managed to slowly open it on one corner which then released the seal - no problems at all since then. 2. Mine came as a pack from www.roofbox.co.uk with the Thule aerobars. I can't say if they are quieter than square bars as I have never used square bars. However, I don't notice any wind noise so maybe the aerobars work.

Get shot of dog ? More seriously get one of those fold up push chairs, i know they look council - but after a while lugging the massive baby system i-bob thingy candy will do your head in and you will realise why every one else has one. Get a cage inside the boot, so the dog has a smaller space, then you can fit all your other baby related junk in.
Or just shoot yourself now and get it over with.

I concur with the aerobars are worth having contingent...
I've got a set along with a Kamei 340K roofbox which will happily go on the roof of my E36 along with a couple of bikes on Cruz Bici-racks.
Allows enough space for 2 adults, 3 kids and a weeks worth of camping kit.
Re economy: The bars alone don't really affect the overall economy, but they are easy enough to put on/take off and with them on and the sunroof open you do get a lot of added noise and turbulence. However, adding the box does knock a couple of mpg off the usual 27-30mpg...although this may be reduced if you have it empty rather than full along with a full weight car!

I've always looked at cars with these roof boxes - especially estates, and wondered to myself do they truly make enough of a difference to warrant the noise, the economy sacrifice and the pain of using them? Do they really give that much more space?
