Am I wrong in thinking these handle like a bag of sh*te smothered bricks? I had a 2.4 avant for a while and it did nothing for me. I always thought a BMW barge was for moderately sharper handling, a Mercedes barge for a little wafting....and the Audi, well....they're built well but don't offer much else. Even if you get it to go a little quicker, it certainly won't feel quick. Just crashy and numb.

Despite my new found loathing for Audis, I've had three. Most recent was a '07 A6. Sold it to a nice young Polish couple.

My penchant for steering feedback and decent throttle response has led me back to a six cylinder BMW.

I've done 10k miles since buying mine last Oct and it's been 100% reliable, not had one single issue with it? Starts 1st time every time, idles smoothly and revs smoothly, both the turbo's come on song properly. The autobox is weak because VAG don't service them, also the heat off of the cats destroys the flange output seal from the gearbox which causes them to lose fluid and eventually die, hence all the knackered A6's Quattro's on ebay? Although the parts to do the job are only £130 from TPS car parts, and in fact they sell the original kit for pre 2003 cars whereas Audi want to sell a newer kit which is in the region of about £500!!! Because it consists of the whole shaft and seal?

Handling wise, the weight of the car always makes it's presence, best part of 1.8 tonnes, and steering which is a tad too light and also too slow geared, results in car that isn't happy changing direction quickly. The grip levels are massive and I changed mine to 17" alloys which improved the handling a bit over the horrid 16" which come as standard. It's a car that's happier cruising on the motorway than it is basting down an A road, on the motorway it's very quiet, wind noise& road noise is very low. The seats are superb and it's very relaxing. But A road driving is best taken at a more sedate pace. Better springs/shocks I'm sure would help a lot. As for the noise of the engine, it does sound good from about 4k on wards and it really pulls nice all the way to the red line. It's a very refined and smooth engine overall. It has fly by wire throttle response, so it does react quickly to throttle inputs.

Costs wise, I average 25-27mpg in mine most of the time. Tax is cheaper as its pre 2001.
I'm doing too many business miles to make it really cost effective to run unfortunately, otherwise i'd be keeping mine, as it's a very solid and well equipped car for the money. Also the Quattro drive in the winter months is superb, even with summer tyres on.

So thoroughly recommend these cars. Although this shed sounds a bit ropey??? But the manuals are quicker than an auto V8 4.2.

My father has a 18 year old A6 avant it was mint when he bought it 3 years ago for £700 he has now put 40000 miles on it and in all that time it's been totally reliable.
All it's needed is a couple of tyres and a pair of wiper blades and it still drives and looks like a 3 year old car.

I bought myself a very cheap 17 year old A4 as a stopgap and that was two years ago, it's been totally reliable.

Audi make top sheds.

However, CAT C cars DO NEED TO BE DECLARED. It has to be stated in the advert (unless of course the seller isn't aware, or he is playing dumb that he isn't aware!).

For a CAT D, you don't have to declare it, even if you are aware of the fact - in this case it is up to the buyer to carry out the necessary HPI checks.
I don't beleive this is true. There is no disctinction between the requirements to declare between Cat C and Cat D. The regulations are the same. I beleive that a private seller need not declare it - unless asked, where he must answer honestly, but that a trade seller must mention it.

Any chance of an exciting shed being SOTW any time soon? Quite a few times I've dropped onto this site to see what this weeks car is I normally see it's something dreary and pretty unimaginative.

Boring, boring, boring. You're telling me that's the best car you could find for £1000 and under this week?! What crap. If this was some sort of mundane consumer advice website I would ever so slightly agree, but it's not.

You can pickup 2.7 Quattro versions of these for peanuts and you will still get people moaning about them. I give up!

i had the 2.8 quattro avant, the car cost a bomb to run. about 2k a year in & maintenance.

i thought the sound system, the sheer size of it inside, and its stability at high speeds on autobahn were its best qualities.

Great shed, one of the best choices in recent shed posts. Q car performance and looks, load lugger, m-way cruiser, everyday commuter, what's not to like. alsoit wont rust like it's contemporary Merc rival. 9/10 from me.

Please don't, if you think that a twin turbo V6 4wd A6 isn't interesting but a front wheel drive 2 litre normally aspirated saloon car is, presumably becuase its got a bloody Alfa badge on it or something?

SOTW is such a diverse concept it will never consistently please anybody. I do see where BeirutTaxi was coming from though. The Audi is a bit “sensible shoes” - though I don’t doubt it is worthy and well built, always starts in the morning and delivers great value for money. It’s bland though but that’s efficiency for you, and why many more interesting cars would make an inferior day to day choice.

PH has another problem with the SOTW concept – there are only so many “interesting” choices available at a thousand pounds. The Porsche 924 and 944 have both been featured in the last few weeks and the Saab 900 was included only a couple of months ago. Even the Alfa 156 has been done before, so the trawl for interesting old tat at a grand is widely drawn…

The Audi only LOOKS sensible. There is nothing sensible about buying a £1000 2.7 litre Twin Turbo V6 AWD car on which even a cambelt change is an engine out job. It's a proper extra strength brave pills endeavour!
