RE: Spotted: Porsche Panamera manual
Discussion
I've had a couple of these for long weekends for a mixture of long distance and B road drives. Both cars were diesel and as others have said the mpg is unbelievable: for the long journeys I was averaging 48mpg, the 'B' road driving went down to about 42mpg. They are such a comfortable place to be, by far the best long haul vehicle I have ever been in and that includes Bentley Continentals and Arnages!
I've tracked one at Silverstone and they are so capable and incredibly well balanced; great road presence, practical, fun and sensible running costs (not including depreciation obviously).
I am toying with buying one but to be honest I know they still have a long way to fall and will be waiting until they are in the mid 30's before one is on my drive.
I'm not sure about a manual version though especially when the auto works so well.
I hope people keep away from them as they will become more affordable sooner!

Must admit to liking the Panamera, I believe they look far better in the metal than in pictures.
Hmm, the opposite is true to my eye. They aren't that bad in pictures because you can't judge the scale but in the metal, when you can see how bulky they really are, they're truly vile. I think white is about the worst colour too; dark colours hide the ungainliness to some extent.

I actually sort of like the Panamera, and the V8 engine is brillant. I hardly ever seem to see them here in the UK though, but I saw laods of them in Vegas recently, they seem to have been quite a hit over there. I saw more Panameras in one walk down the strip than I've seen collectively in the UK!

The depreciation of these things is staggering, and the cost is quite incredible relative to the new M5 which offers more of everything for considerably less, if you want a new warp speed uber saloon.
Except a manual gearbox option in the UK.El Shafto said:
I love it, but I can see why most manufacturers never put manual gearboxes into their super-saloons - It's because they're not designed to be 'driver's' cars and they're targeted at the sort of people that have far too much money and self importance to be expected to change gear themselves...just imagine the indignity of having to change gear like a poor person?
People who spec paddle shift are not real driving enthusiasts unless they have medical reasons, its just not the same, paddles only make the experience more mundane and lifeless, its too easy, its not you its a computer! I feel restricted when driving a paddleshift car even if it is a quarter of a second faster(in the right hands!). I also agree the big porker is a beast and a nice looking motor in the flesh. If I was ten years older and minted then for me it would be a no brainer!kambites said:

That's the biggest load of bks I've read in ages. You clearly haven't driven a good performance car with a paddleshift gearbox Beaverking said:

So you can buy a second hand E39 M5, run it for 2 years, inc. service, petrol, tax and insurance, and you will spend the same (including depreciation) as you would if you had owned one of these Panameras on Depreciation alone in the first 4 months.
The depreciation of these things is staggering, and the cost is quite incredible relative to the new M5 which offers more of everything for considerably less, if you want a new warp speed uber saloon.
I think the new M6 4dr when (if) it comes out will steal a lot of prospective Panamera owners.
Likewise, you could have ran a 996 turbo in the same way as above for the depreciation on my 997 turbo. The depreciation of these things is staggering, and the cost is quite incredible relative to the new M5 which offers more of everything for considerably less, if you want a new warp speed uber saloon.

But who cares?
Do you think that the kind of buyer for this car new will be considering a 10 year old BMW (as good a 10 year old BMW it is)?
Also, cost considerably less? Have you specced up a F10 M5? Won't have much change from £85k, so I would say they are priced about the same.
However, the Panamera isn't about all out performance like the M5. It's a far more comfortable car and will be aimed at a different kind of buyer.
