All of you people saying "if it aint broke, dont fix it" in terms of the styling...what are you talking about!?

So are they going to make slight variations on the DB9 for the next 30 years? You dont make one thing, then settle and milk it forever, you make something new. Look at Jaguar who went from the E-Type to the XJS. Sure the E-Type looks a million times better, but you cant just keep making the same thing, its boring. Challenge yourself, surely thats what designers are for? The SLS looks unique, the Vanquish looks like I've seen it all already.
Yes! This! 100 times this!

(except the SLS looks like anothe retro concession to me!)

So as I understand it Aston range is:
  • Cygnet - Toyota IQ in a party frock, tiny engine
  • Vantage - 2 seater sports coupe/convertible, choice of engines + Zagato styling
  • DB9 - 2+2 seater GT coupe/convertible, 6-litre V12
  • Virage - 2+2 seater slightly sporty GT coupe/convertible, 6-litre V12
  • Rapide - 2+2 seater GT coupe with 4 doors, 6-litre V12
  • DBS - 2+2 seater Sports GT, 6-litre V12
  • Vanquish - 2 seater sports GT, 6-litre V12
  • One-77 - 2 seater super car, 6-litre V12
So basically, Aston have a build-to-order system with the following choices:
  • Body - Box / Short Coupe / Long Coupe
  • Roof - Solid / Convertible
  • Engine - Tiny / V8 / 6-litre V12
  • Power - Pittance / Enough / More / Lots
  • Suspension - Comical / Soft / Normal / Bit Harder / Granite
  • Seats - 2 / 2+2
  • Doors - 2 / 4
  • Styling - Smooth / Smooth + Fins / Smooth + a bit abstract (Zagato) / Bit Mental
Pick any combination.
Special Offer: Until July 31st, orders for V12 Cygnet One-77 Convertible come with a free counselling session.

The One-77 has a 7.3 litre V12 but is irrelevant listing it since they have sold all of the 77 cars. There are also variations of the 6 litre V12 (I believe it's something to do with the intake that changes the power) of 470bhp/600nm; 490bhp/570nm; 510bhp/570nm and also 573bhp/620nm. There are also 3 different gearboxes (automated manual/sportshift, automatic/tiptronic and manual - not available on all cars).

That's a hell of an expensive way to look so cheap. Aston have been out of ideas for a long time.
Hmm, having checked your car history, you clearly have very different tastes to an Aston buyer.

Fair enough. However Aston still list it as a "Current Model" on their website!

The flashy blingy brown press shots don't appear to do it any favours.

It actually looks rather good in daylight, in white at least:

Although there's something a bit ungainly and heavy about the rear, IMO:

Looks like they tried to take the waspish waisting from the One-77 and apply it here, but it doesn't quite work for me somehow.

Ah, in George H, it appears we have a Prat on our hands.

This from a new poster? What exactly is wrong with George's post? (he has some odd tastes, but he's not a pratt)

ETA I find your criticisms of Aston odd, given your choice of the overweight, underpowered, wallowy Maserati.

Anyway, I've seen the car. I've sat in it. From what I've seen so far, it's lovely inside and out.

I'll be driving it as soon as Park Lane get one (early next year, I think).

Oh don't get me wrong, it's still a fine-looking car. But it's not as neatly resolved and therefore as fine-looking as the standard V8 Vantage, IMO. Aston have spent the best part of a decade now fiddling with the basic shape from the DB9, but all they've really done is make it a bit more chintzy and showy, which isn't an improvement, again IMO.

Can't blame them for sticking to the tried-and-tested formula, though. It seems to work for Porsche.

A bit disappointing. It is just a rehash.
They need to take some big steps soon or they will be left behind technologically and people will tire of the same floor plan and aesthetic.

Hmmmm.

Initial reaction is that it is a touch 'overstyled'

Seems to be a common theme with a lot of marques - particularly at the premium end of the market. The FF Range Rover has evolved into something quite hideous, whilst the the current Mercedes range is (to my eye) a lot less elegant and understated when compared to generations past.

Can you explain to me why you think people will get tired of the same floor pan? No one is tired of BMW making their cars from pressed steel panels spot welded together. Same goes for Merc, Audi, VW, Toyota etc. I don't see you slating these manufactures for all doing the same thing & not doing anything new in decades?

You could not take the body structure from this car and build a DB9, DBS, Rapide or V8.

Well it's yet another tweaked DB9 isn't it. Don't like the wheels and hate the front splitter, the standard DB9 shape is nicer.

When are they going to stop using up all their histroic names on various bodykitted DB9's and actually do a new design? Even if they can't afford to move on from the current floorpan/chassis/drivetrain they could at least put an exciting new body on it.

It is not a tweaked DB9. It ha sa chassis made the same way as the DB9, but it's not the same. You could say the same of just about any other new model. The body is entirely new with every panel being carbon fibre. The interior is also entirely new. The engine is significantly modified. It is no more a tweaked DB9 than a 991 is a tweaked 997.
