Funny how these scum always think that having kids in the car justifies their retarded actions. Had someone threaten me before "If my kid was in the car i would of killed you" All for an overtake.
I think when some people get kids and realise that they have to live for someone else other than themselves they can't hack it.

Quite horrendously IANAL, but he's threatened to kill you and seemed dtermined to do so. I believe your speed would be justified in those circumstances (SP&L could confirm or deny). Sod the speeding/traffic laws at this point, get yourself safe. I'd do the same thing if I needed to get myself or family member to a hospital in a hurry: I would get there and FAST and then I'd deal with any speeding/red light running etc afterwards. (I'm talking about life threatening stuff, not 'routine' trips to A&E.)

I'd say just chalk it up to experience. Terrifying though it sounds, you're still alive and, whether or not the police could find and prosecute the other guy, it wouldn't stop them doing the same thing to you too. The other guy is obviously a massive w ker, so just be content in the fact that you don't have to live your life as a massive w ker, whereas he does, and will get his comeuppance soon enough.

Disco You said: Is it his fault that the other person was a nutjob? No.
Would this have happened had he made an offensive gesture at a stranger? No. So whenever anyone ever does anything wrong, they should get away with it, scot free, in case they get upset about it?

twink said: I know that tunnel well and there's periodic cameras all the way along it, including a CCTV camera facing into the flow of traffic from the tunnel exit by the fly over as you go past B&Q. I'm guessing from what you said, you came off at the Clatterbridge exit? Get it reported. Correct. I came off at the Wallasey exit where you can then get off towards B&Q roundabout but when I saw he was following me I took the exit that merges back onto the M53. The altercation happened very shortly after the road goes from 2 lanes into 3, just past the Upton spur exit. I didn't have enough space between us by Arrowe Park exit and I also felt that I had less chance of getting away as it's a lot more open. So I came off at Clatterbridge, took the first exit and then headed towards Brackenwood Golf Club.

No doubt the other guy was a nutcase. The moral to the story though has to be that anyone you see might be a nutcase and unless you are absolutely 100% certain you can handle yourself if they take you on, including the fact that they might have a knife, don't get involved in tit-for-tat road rage.
It sounds sanctimonious I know but for all you know the guy in the other car is as much of a scumbag as Kenny Noye and will actually kill you.
If put the situation you describe I'd have done the same I think, i.e. nail it, do a few miles at 140-ish then find somewhere to hide.

Disco You said: edit: OP you edited in your final bullet point after I'd opened the thread. I didn't, it was in my OP, the edit I made was to change the word 'right' for the word 'left' midway through my post.

Sitting there on the phone doesn't stop a guy who has told you he is going to kill you from actually doing it though, that was my first thought as my mind was racing. Having your murder happen on CCTV doesn't make it any better. Indeed, I probably would've done the same.

He was willing to attempt to force me into a concrete reservation and to stop in the outside lane of a motorway in order to drive his car at me in reverse. I'm happy being alive, genuinely, anyone who wants to kill me scares me and I make no apologies for that.

PetrolDriver said: Also, one of my major, major worries is that he spots me again, but at a time when I don't spot him.
His car was fairly distinctive but then mine is no shrinking violet. The only slight relief I have from this worry is that any day now I will have my retention certificate from the DVLA through and I can effectively give my car a new ID. I also have longer than my usual hair at the moment, so I'm going for a short chop.
(I'm that scared of him) Seriously. Police. Now. You can't spend your next few months looking over your shoulder for this psycho. I'm sure the police will see that the evasive driving (note, use this term, not speeding or "gunning it") is justified, especially when you deemed the threat to your life as serious. Ok, yes, hand signals and swearing at people could be dealt with by the public order act (I think, I saw it on police interceptors once about a biker who flicked the bird at an unmarked car) but actually attempting to injury (or kill) someone is a whole different thing.

Nothing against you but i have learnt not to flash/beep my horn at stupid drivers.
I just take a breath and move on, even backing off, pulling over if needed. The problem is there are homicidal people out there who will kill due to there perceived ego threat, or seriously harm you. By flashing etc gives them a chance to hone in on you. At the end of the day it won't change their habits.
In your case I would have been straight onto 999 thou as it sounds very dangerous.

Report it. The stopping on the motorway then reversing at you takes him to a level above the normal threatening road rage idiot.

His motorway antics were by far the worst part. He put many other innocent people at huge risk.
OP, you have to report this tosser, if for nothing else but to stop anyone being harmed in the future; we have all heard of road rage but this guy couldn't care less about his own life or even the welfare of the children with him!

Get it reported. It'll all be on CCTV and if his car is distinctive then he will be easy to track down. Proper nutcase. I have had something on a much smaller scale 10 years or so ago, some guy on a roundabout thought I was blocking him when he tried to cut across in front, in actual fact I was trying to avoid him! He boxed me in and got out screaming running towards me. Car behind me had pulled up to my bumper Fortunately I had stopped about 18 inches before the exit ended, so just managed to get down on to the north circ slip road and booted it (with him running after me screaming "COME ERE!" ) Took the long way home...

It sounds sanctimonious I know but for all you know the guy in the other car is as much of a scumbag as Kenny Noye and will actually kill you. +1. OP, I sympathise with you. I learned this a good few years ago after a late night run-in with a complete nutcase on the M40. Coming out from London on the 4 lane stretch past Beaconsfield there is nothing on the road (literally nothing, for a good mile or so I can see ahead) except for a crusty looking old Granada in the outside lane going about 50. I want to get past, so go from lane 1 to 4 and sit at a safe distance behind hoping he'll pull over when he sees I'm there. He doesn't, so I give one flash to signal that I'm there. No response. Eventually after about 20 seconds of crawling along behind, I move back to lane 1 and safely undertake. At this point, Granada man goes absolutely bats t crazy and swerves across the carriageway and accelerates hard up behind me (so close I can't see his headlights any longer). I can see in the rear view (though its night, that stretch is well lit) that he's got a kitchen knife and is making throat slitting gestures. I accelerate to get away, but it is clear that his old but more powerful Ford has the measure of my 75bhp P-reg Punto. Tried slowing down, but at this stage he comes alongside and tries to ram me off the road, I have to swerve onto the hard shoulder and brake to avoid him hitting me, then jump him by slamming it into third and swerving back into lane 4 to get back past. Basically it ended up with him following me with me wringing the nuts off my Fiat until the Watlington turnoff (J6, about 20 miles) when I managed to go out into lane 3, he followed and then at the last second swerved to take the exit whilst braking hard to make the sliproad and knowing the sliproad curved quite quickly, that he wouldn't be able to follow even if he drove up the verge.

Do you have a lot of time on your hands, or something? I'm sure your 'manliness' would be clear and present to all when confronted by a 20-stone thug chasing you with a knife. I'm sure you would make a very 'manly' getaway, and then come straight to PH to tell us how tough you were...

Good read OP. I've had a few situations myself. There are some nutters out there. The problem is you don't know who you are dealing with. They could be just all bluster or you may be up against someone like a drug dealer who doesn't give a s t what the consequences will be. At the time, the adrenalin and the anger make you prone to reacting badly which can then exacerbate the situation. Next time someone cuts you up, take some deep breaths, calm down and continue on your stress free way. Hard to do I know but it might help you avoid being six foot under

To the OP: The sad fact of life is that this whole country has dotted around it horrible little twunts who try and transfer their rage from their failures in life over to other people. They actively (sometimes subcontiously) seek out confrontations where they can then release their inner anger onto others, often in the most verbally violent of manners. There are a few things to be assured of and relaxed about: For him this won't have been a one off event to be remembered. By now he will have done the same to someone else, he will have done something similar to someone before you. He won't remember any of this event. He has a s t life. Someone that irrationally angry has major problems. Pity them, their life is rubbish, total rubbish and normally of their own making. They are just one of life's losers. And finally, those nasty stories you read about in the papers about confrontations between two men when one of them is left dead? That's what happens when one of these people meets another of their ilk or a professionally unhinged punter. It's called karma.
