Complete nonsense! The EU have channged the law, you can pay off in part or in full at any time during the agreement, you will save money as you get a rebate of interest. There are NO fees for settling early!

Back to finance, for a second, I haven't seen this one mentioned yet...

I went to see a car that was right at the top of my 5k price bracket, but just inside it. Noticed that it was on the forecourt for a thousand quid over the asking price. I pointed this out and apparently the price advertised online was the "price with finance". Basically if I wanted to pay cash (real money, not personal loan) then I would have to pay an extra 20%. It's very hard to walk away laughing, when you realise you've wasted 2 hours of your life going 25 miles in completely the opposite direction to the other cars you're planning to look at that day.
Which I am 99% sure is illegal. They cannot have a cash price and then a finance price because to work out the interest you need a base cash price. Are they selling the financed car as 0% interest? Well they shouldn't be because it can't be 0%.

You are correct about the pro rata interest relief but there are nearly always early settlement fees - if there are none, it is actually used as a selling point of the loan over and above the competition. You should always ensure you read the small print for any loan you are considering taking out so you fully understand what you are signing up to.smile

Gave up on dealers after the following,

- one owner turning into two owners after purchase, "it doesn't make a difference sir"

- dangerous lies after purchase when collecting vehicle, "a bulge on a tyre wall is not dangerous, not even an MOT failure" (VX stealer)

- daft lies from Honda stealer, pointing out minor wheel arch rust on £1000 VX PX "we'll have to cut out the metal and weld it back, then respray the area before we can sell it"

- tyres swapped before collection

Now only purchase from nice people with nice photos, last three cars over a cup of tea and friendly chat. Each one mint, well looked after and washed before collection.

The thrill of the tracking and chase is nice too.

Not really a scam, and I have mentioned it here before, but it was a classic.

My friend and I went to see the E92 M3 when it came out. I was pointing out the carbon fibre roof to my friend when the salesman comes over. My friend asks the salesman why it has a carbon fibre roof.

"Two reasons. One, it is made of carbon fibre. Two, it is a great feature"

Thanks, I've been selling finance on cars for years now, so I've got quite a good idea.

When looking at a car, I was once told that the blue exhaust & suspension on the near side was down to colour coding, not overspray.

No, my point is that FSH should mean a stamped book. I understand how easy it is to forge the stamps, that's a different problem entirely.
A stamped book is nice, but on its own is not what I call FULL. A stamp doesn't tell me any detail about what has been done, if any parts were replaced, if genuine replacements or pattern parts were used, if manufacturers service schedules were followed etc etc.

Call it "service history" by all means, but not "full".

A year or two ago, a well known BMW chain down here on the South Coast had a special weekend deal offering 2k off selected used cars.

So went down and inquired about a nice E90 330d Sport that ticked a lot of the boxes.

Was getting a valuation on my trade in, Mercedes E320 Avangarde sepc full MBSH and decent mileage for an oil burner (60k at the time).

That morning I'd already been to look at a E90 320D sport at a BMW main dealer up near Winchester, had my part ex appraised and valued, and to be honest was offered slightly over book.

Same process at the local dealer "valued" my car against their 330D at wait for it........

2k less than the Winchester dealer!!!!

What a bunch of utter rip off merchants....

Needless to say never accepted their valuation, and when I queried their undervaluation, was told that was what their Sales Manager valued my car at.
So, the dealer with the more expensive car, gave you an extra £2k in px. Surely all he was doing was giving you a £2k discount. Therefore your cost to change was the same for both cars?

I've never understood this business of tyre swapping, although have fallen foul of it once

Presumably, as part of a different deal on another car a buyer wants the tyres changing - so the crafty dealer swaps them off another car (the one you intend to buy).

In my case, i was lucky as the dealer had included pictures of all the wheels in their advert which clearly showed 4 meaty Michelins. The 2 Bridgestone & 2 Champiro tyres which i found on there when i went to pick it up stood out like a sore thumb. tt even argued the point that i was in the wrong, that was until i showed him the pics on my iphone

Guess who got their deposit back and went elsewhere byebye

Yes, i know dealers have got to make a living and times are hard, but the rotten ones really are a right bunch of bds

Last month i drove from Sheffield to Warrington to look at a car described as Pristine condition. Forecourt turned out to be someones house and the 'pristine' car was in a right state. Front bumper peppered with stone chips, scratches all over it and the bottom half of the two nearside doors had the tell tale sandpaper fell of a cheap blowover. I told him where i was coming from and told him i would simply walk if not as described, yet i still got the A1 speach ..Nobbber furious

biggrin I've had a bit of all this from quite a few dealers over the years.

So in the interests of fairness and balance, can I 'big up' a dealer I bought a car from 18 months ago?

Had been looking for a specific car for around a specific price (around 3k) for a while. I had travelled and viewed 4 'howlers' offered in private sales that were nowhere near described.

I then found what appeared to be a car matching my criteria, at a dealers in West Sussex called Bipod Cars.

I called them, and they gave me a calm, rational and 'sensationalsit / adjective' free description of the vehicle. I arranged to view later that day.

Arrived as arranged. Car was moved from outside in the rain, into their little workshop where it was leathered off dry for me. I was left to conduct my usual nine-million point OCD checks, with no interruptions or sales pitch.

I was later left in a comfy leather sofa in reception to forensically analyse the service history (which was absolutely lovely).

They'd taken the car in as a P/X, and I think wanted to get shot - as most of their cars are quite high-end luxury rides.

I was so happy to find such a nice example at a dealer, with great history - described to me over the phone with absolute accuracy, and no sales pitch or other rubbish levelled at me when I got there. Ok, they might well have known it was a nice example and would maybe sell itself - but still, it was so refreshing to receive nothing but professional courtesy, politeness and discretion when buying a used car from a dealer.

I then made an offer which was accepted without fuss, (500 quid off a 3 grand price) I paid the man, and drove away in my new car (which is still fabulous, 18 months later)

So yeah - I'll be going back to Bipod Cars next time too!

Perhaps we should have a topic on the scams pulled by punters:
You could but it's not really relevant. Car dealers are professionals - they get paid for their dishonesty.
.......and punters are amateur dishonesty merchants so that makes it ok does it?

I'm not convinced, when I bought my car I was sure to check for early repayment fees and there where non. I think there was something about frontloading interest, so if paid of within the first few months it would be more expensive.

Recently I made an overpayment on my car finance which resulted in the following letter:

So I'm inclined to agree with rgw2012

Correct.

MY Merc had a book (CAP & Glasses) trade value of £8k. Winchester dealer offered me £8400, as incentive as I believe the 320D had been on their stock list for around 8/10 weeks.

The "local" BMW dealer offered me after a lengthy (read double the time the Winchester dealer took) appraisal process and on line HPI check £6k.

He was still trying to tell me it was a great deal with their 2k off the screen price as I exited the showroom...

My personal favourite is the "going to see the Sales Manager" routine. The one that sticks in my mind was at a large Ford dealer with glass fronted offices. The salesman went in and started making it look like he was doing the best deal for me. This included arm waving, pointing, use of a calculator and multiple visits. Didn't buy the car from them in the end partly due to that.
Have you ever worked in sales?

In the various places I have worked at, its not uncommmone to go and get the discount authorised by the management.
Indeed. If you get discount authorised by the first person you speak to, they are probably part of the management team. That goes for anything in retail. The fact he was making it look obvious is neither here nor there.

A friend once bought a used car from a London dealer. Before it was collected, a day or two after the deal was done, all four matching tyres had been changed for a mis-matched well worn set.

The tax disc on a used car I once bought was for a totally different vehicle; I didnt notice it until months later.
To be fair the latter one can easily be a mistake, hardly a scam.
