LS will be fantastic if slightly clinical. The 'Japanese Mercedes' tag doesn't worry me too much. It might be a slightly clinical affair but then the E38 is hardly the life and soul of the party, though I have actually driven some of those! I'm just looking for something that will waft me down the roads in great comfort, shrugging off the pissing rain or the freezing cold that sometimes greets me as I drive home from work at 7AM in the winter... Overtaking punch is also a must. I said that having owned and very much enjoyed an LS430 for a few months not so long age. Within your budget, there is even potential to get a facelift (53 on) - I'm still kicking myself from missing out on one at £3150 not so long ago. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-54-REG-LEXUS-LS430-...At £4k, I'd be tempted by an early E65. On an E38, I'd probably try and get something tidy for a bag.

Baryonyx said: Is that not an ultimate7.co.uk car? Pic pinched from GMS Cars current selection, purely to illustrate how stunning (I think) the E38 looks in Mora Individual spec. Baryonyx said: Does the V8 engine improve the experience in any great measure? Yes, it adds some actually useful performance for a relatively reasonable additional cost in fuel. It's enough to enliven the chassis and for me, highlights its chief benefit over a contemporary S430/500), whereas the 2.8 never really tasks it. The '50 is better still as then the uncanny smoothness of the six returns and some, along with the grunt - and a bit - of the V8. Mechanical and electrical complexity goes up a couple of notches over even the V8 cars though, as does weight and at the price-point, represents more of a liability, even factoring in that any other E38 is hardly Micra-esque to run.

Fees do sound fairly high as you say and no one can tell me exactly what they are/ what the scale is. IIRC on a £3k car it is about £385 for a private buyers. Trade rates vary depending on the account level. The private buyers fees are posted up on walls and you have to add £25+VAT (I think) "V5 fee". Cars with mechanical reports I think also have an extra fee. Thanks for that. I'd be using a trade buyer and save about £100 per car which could help. Whilst we're on the subject, any idea if they're much less for ~£1k cars?

Is there a demand for such a beasty do you think? Demand - probably Profit - no I watched a very, very tidy X plate 523i SE with 94k up and FSH go under the hammer today for under a grand.

Probably a faulty hazard switch. Can be checked by removing then bridging pins 3 & 6, iirc Yes sir, exactly what it is! Indicators working again, but hazards are not. Eeeerm. A new hazard switch along with window switch? Or? There are two types of hazard switch available from Euro Car Parts, the more expensive one is taller. Can you tell I had a indicator / hazard switch issue on my 190e? :-)

Bit of T-cut to sort the fading and some tyre beading on the wheel to sort the slow puncture (original VR6 wheels well known for it), and this would be a cracker! http://www.vwcorrado.co.uk/Email sent, hope I don't regret this. Didn't receive a response, possibly because I mailed him at his domain name address usiong the contact button, now tried the address in his text....

Which thankfully is sodding miles away from me or I'd be there now, salivating and presenting a Tesco bag full of readies. I LOVE this. I once took an Audi 100 with the five-pot (2.0E, so it had a fuel cutoff at 5000rpm!) on a banger rally - we cut the roof out (non-structural bits) and built a turret on the top, then painted it camo, so it was kind of like a scout car. We threw on a Cherry Bomb exhaust that my mate had lying around, and it sounded absolutely amazing!

oO Trouble Oo said: Emeye said: Sound like a similar story to my E34 525 I bought in October last year for £550. Still going strong and very bork resistant. Seems the Germans built their cars properly around this time. I've always fancied a 190. The 'borked' indicators that stopped working have started again, result! It appears connected to the hazard switch and if the hazard switch isn't fully depressed the indicators don't like it. c'est la vie, no problem now :-) I can't get over how relaxing a drive it is. Going to take it from Essex to Stoke and back again this weekend. Wish me luck... You don't need luck! I ran a ratty old W124 as a daily long commute slag last year and only had to change ball joints and anti roll bar bushes in 15k. Changing the gearbox oil/filter really slickened it up and I was told changing the coolant is a good precaution. Also check the jacking points (under the little squares) as the cladding can collect can collect goop and rust them, a rub down & hammerite is all mine needed. They're so easy to work on. Enjoy!
