Then there's the interior. Just not sold on any of the facelift "upgrades". Still fabulous cars, but to my eye the facelift bits whiff of the demise of MB as a maker of quality cars. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C326718A tidy looking 6-pot pre-facey mit cloth und original Mexico. Superb.

It's meant to be on par with a 540 performance wise, don't know about top speed, I thought it would be restricted to 155 like the 540 is... maybe it isn't. I'm considering the 6 cylinder E39 B10 as a replacement for my 528i...not sure if another E39 is going to happen though, might try something different. Problem is there isn't much that's as good.

Not quite a 560 though is it Not being in the position to buy that off you when I had the chance will haunt me for a long time!

Not quite in the same league as the last one, I agree, ironduke! The guy who bought the 560 took it back to Ireland and when we swapped e-mails a few weeks ago, it sounded like he'd had to spend around €3k to make the car watertight and fix a few bits, so i think you had a lucky escape (as did I!) At this age condition is everything, I wouldn't be put off by a nice facelift. If you frequent london and aim to own your car more than a few nights, get something else. I soon got fed up of dodgy b ds offering to buy my diesel off me in broken English as well!

I've heard of wiring loom problems - are they easy to spot? Anything else worth worrying about - or should I just call the guy and buy it?! That has been for sale a long while now. I guess the mileage and the cloth interior put people off but they shouldn't. That and it is not a 3.2. The colour scheme is lovely. Cloth has a certain charm. The 2.8 m104 is the smoothest of 124s except perhaps the OM606 diesel cars (which are painfully slow). It has had the loom done; it must have had the head gasket done before now. But be realistic: it will need work to be safe and satisfactory. It will need rear suspension bushes (circa £750 for everything, four subframe bushes, ten links, diff bushes, at a specialist). It will need bits and bobs in the steering and the box itself may be worn (maximum £500 including a new or refurbished box). It will need new front shocks (£150 piss easy DIY). It will need new brake and fuel pipes front to back (£150). It will need air con work (budget £500 maximum). It will need other bits and bobs, probably in the front suspension, maybe some brakes, maybe a radiator (budget £500 again). It will need new speakers (£100). And it will need a very thorough service (£500). You may wish to change the engine mounts (£250). Give it all that and it will last another 20 years and provide superior motoring to any new car. A well-sorted 124 is a superb vehicle: you cannot buy cars this good anymore, not new at least.
