Probably been posted, but this is as cool as they come.

If only I had 5 grand.
It's cooler than that. But only you, me and a handful of others know it. Everyone else thinks a 520d is cooler!

Cooler than the other side of the pillow. Patrick sounds like a brilliant guy to buy from.

That is exactly the kind of person you want to buy one from. I'd also ask for dibs on his C6 when that comes to be sold too. I'll check that lottery ticket in the fruit bowl tonight, if it come up good, I'll have that!

With that, I also agree. It can't be denied. But that doesn't mean that the diesels do luxury better than petrol. Diesels have come on a massive way. Put it like this.... I'd be amazed if a diesel found its way into a rolls Royce phantom replacement.
Of course not. But then I can't imagine that the buyers of a £250k car really care that much about petrol costs, and I doubt they're company cars.

Agree, that is lovely. But C6's aren't far off so it would be a tough choice for me.

you're missing my point. i'm NOT denying the diesels make better financial sense. but that's all they do. that's why they're selling well, it doesn't make the car more luxurious for having a diesel in it.

Are you slightly missing the point too? There are some splendid luxo-barges out there for affordable money, and as a bonus some of them have diesel engines and so give the same luxury without emptying your wallet quite as fast. The diesel engine doesn't necessarily change the luxurious interior or the ride.

Not everyone does 3000 miles a year in their luxo-barge - I have specifically bought mine to do 25,000 a year, and want comfort and luxury while it does those miles. Getting 45mpg on the motorway from a (remapped) A8 3.0 diesel, whilst only paying £7k for the car, and having a seriously fully adjustable seat (check out the six separate controls on the seat squab), is my idea of a nice place to be without too much wallet damage.

Luxo-barge buyers also aren't all interested in going everywhere at Warp Factor 9 either. Frankly, traffic and speed cameras make a 500 bhp, 5-6 litre petrol engine a little redundant.....I am quite happy to waft and save the brown trouser moments for track days. The savings made by buying older cars and not suffering jaw-dropping depreciation allows me the spare cash to do this.

By the way, I love this thread mainly for the interesting cars, but also for the way it gets a good discussion going.

Having said that...

Bentley are doing a diesel. This helps to substantiate the argument that people actually like diesels for their power delivery, rather than simply tolerate them for their economy.

Or that the wealthy don't get wealthy by 'wasting' money? Or that the advantage of visiting petrol stations half as often is worth driving a diesel?

A Bentley turbo petrol has diesel-esque power delivery anyway.

So why 'waste' money on such a car in the first place then? As Dan touched upon above, the buyer of a six figure (£) vehicle, isn't really going to be too troubled by 15mpg vs 30mpg. And the fuel tank on your average Benters is large enough only to need refueling long after the driver does, so that's not really a valid argument either (albeit I accept it's bound to be a consideration for any potential punter).

Why is it so difficult to accept that a modern, powerful, multi-cylinder diesel is the perfect source of propulsion for a car designed to cover big distances in comfort?

I assume Bentley are putting it in the Conti?

Given how everyone raves about the 640d, I think diesel GTs make a lot of sense.

I'm just converting the 911 to dagjuice now.

OK Mr Pretender, roll on a year or so's time and you need to replace the Golf and the Porsche with a do everything car. You've met someone and had twins so you need an estate. Which 5 series touring do you go for, the 550D or the 550i?

That's bloody insensitive, Dave.

GP fires blanks; he'll never need more than an MX-5. He didn't want everyone knowing his business though.
