I fear the fun would be fleeting, as novelty is eroded by designed-in decrepitude.

Not personally, but the £800 difference is good chunk to cover it. Would the 3 litre struggle a bit when it's loaded up?
This is the missus' real-world dream car, so oomph isn't really a factor.

She's dropping to three days when she goes back to work (after our first child) and having one of these would liberate some fleet bandwidth for something less sensible to complement. If we can tolerate the fuel consumption, that is.

I've tried to sell her on an E39 touring (I've had one before, and she quite liked it) but she really wants an X5 or a P38 RR.
Fuel consumption will pale into insignificance to the other bill a P38RR will give you.

Any thoughts on this? Do these take high mileage well?

I'm not far off a phase in my life where I'm going to go through two old classics to smoke around in a year I think. Just rotate them. That is marvellous.

One step ahead of you there.

Sterling Grey. Not Grey. Not Silver. Sterling Grey.

Right, understood. And the engine? "Yes, it MUST have an engine, duh..."

Yes, very nearly bought one last year. I think we'd be on the streets by now if he'd accepted my offer.

Ours is a bit younger and less leggy than that, but still 10 years old and not a spot of rust. Everything feels tight and fresh, and once up to speed (it is NOT quick) very comfortable. Crap gearbox calibration. Compared to an E39 auto and my E320 it is really frustrating to try to hustle. Time again, I'd have waited for a manual.

X5 can really look nice in certain subtle colours.

Thats wonderful and worth every penny of its £2000 premium over the pile of junk in the Ebay advert on the previous page, provided its as good as it looks obviously.

£4.5k at last service though? What on earth was done? Whilst I appreciate BMW rates are hardly cheap it does highlight just quite how eyewatering these things get when they break and does make me wonder whether the typical buyer of these cars now they are at £5k can actually afford to keep them, and whether you'd subsequently want to purchase one from somebody who finds out the hard way that he cannot.

That X5 just needs the oem bit of scaffold tube inserted along that black gulley in the bumper.

Yeah that's a bit of an eye opener. Ad says disks/pads all round. Insp II service on top must be 500+. Tyres can't be cheap - maybe they were replaced, plus a few sundry items maybe?

That's twice this week you've had me off to Google images to see what you mean by that, but I still can't see it. Can you illustrate please?

AC? That'll be £1500. Few oil seels; the same. Inspection + brakes and we're at £5000. You'd get £500 off as good will and there we go...

Edit: At book rate my rocker covers, rear main seal, waterpump, coolant hose and flush would have topped £2000...

you mean turbo chargers. look at a turbo charged petrol engine, it's power delivery is VERY similar to a turbo charged diesel engine. it's not the diesel giving it that power delivery, it's the turbo chargers.

classic example, look at the 335d power curve. then look at a 335i power curve. they're extremely similar, except the 335i has the torque over a wider rev range hence it produces more power (well, it revs higher hence it's quicker)

Personally, with regard to W124s, I can't really look past this one. I really struggle to see how it's not gone already his stock seems to move quickly)

Women like the high driving position. One alternative with better fuel consumption is an XC90 diesel. Get a light leather interior and they are a very nice place to be.
Personally I would avoid the RR - unless you own shares in the servicing dealership.
